Howdy Dave, ours are not stainless steel, just the poverty pak poly ones that came with our van.
My practise is to part fill them when leaving for home, and after a few Ks, I pull up & open the drain cocks. My logic is that travelling will suspend any "things" in the tank & they will run out.
We store the van with empty tanks & I flush them with fresh water prior to leaving on our next trip. Cheers

I do the same as dave - seams to work well for us as no one has gotten sick as yet

We also use water from the river ( where ever we camp ) for cleaning dishes and so forth - and the water in the van is for cooking and making ice ( and general consumption )

but we usually go away for 3 days min at a time....

G' Day Dave

Have had a stainless tank for 5 years no problems yet, but I always add a water purifier available from boat shops ie Whitworths /Bias Marine .

Regards

I have a 50 ltr ss water tank in my Patrol and never drain it ....just keep topping it up. Figured that if I lived the better part of my growing up years drinking water from a couple of gavanalised iron tanks without ever draining them then notings going to grow in my ss tank that's gonna kill me :-)

Dave.
I always drain the tanks (S/S & Plastic) in my K-Karavan if it’s going to be parked up for more than a month or so. Probably more habit than anything else. I suspect most problems with tainting etc from stored tanks comes from the water left lying in the plastic hoses through out the van, including the one used to fill the van.

I only do my 25l tank every 6 months. I put a basic sanitiser through it and wash it back out.

Thanks everyone,
I think I'll leave about 4lts with some sanitiser in it to slop around and just flush & refill when going away.

Keep mine full as a goog with tap water when at home - drain and fill with rainwater prior to departure - never had a problem with odours (the lack of air while the tank is full in storage is a good situation in my view).
