G'day all I hope someone can help with advice. My 78 series troopy gets the wobbles up in the front end when I hit a bump or get changing road conditions on bitumen. I have replaced steering damper, suspension bushes, checked king pin bearings, balanced tyres, rotated wheels and am running out of ideas. It doesn't happen all of the time but seems to be getting worse. If I put the wheels off the side of the road into loose dirt when it has the shakes this stops the problem. Also doesn't seem to happen when towing or on dirt. I have taken it to a couple of toyota dealers but have not got any real help. Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,Scott

Had a similar sort of issue where there was a steering shudder that once started got worse and worse. Did all the things you have done. No one had any idea, Toyota included. A regular service had a repack of wheel bearings in it and the problem disappeared. Suspect something was not adjusted correctly. I'm not that mechanical but the timing has to be more than coincidence!

Scotty,

This sounds similar to a problem we had with an old 60 series.

Check the adjustable, greaseable, tie rod ends. These may need tightening up. Just remove the split pin, tighten the large "screw"inside, then back off a 1/4 turn. Refit the split pin, then regrease. If this is the problem, then doing this should cure it.

Wouldn't have thought a 78 series would be worn yet, unless you've done plenty of clicks.

Hooroo,
Bob.
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

Don't just tighten them up. Inside the drag link end there is a spring and they can fracture. I found one in my 75 troopy had broken into 3 pieces. $5 replacement from Toyota fresh grease and the steering was back to tight and steady.
