Camping then, and today.

My first recollection of camping with a school mate was probably around the age of 7 or 8 (without the adults around).

The country was hilly and sparsely cleared where we lived. Like juniors of that age we plotted and planned, then came up with the following kit:

1. Two barley bags to sleep in.
2. A box of matches and knife
3. Stirling .22
4. Potatoes

The country to the back of us was a mythical place that needed to be explored. Off we went with the two kelpies and finally stopped walking just before nightfall.

Got a fire going and had a feed of potatoes. Life couldn't be better round that camp fire talking to a school mate and discussing our next adventure.

Unfortunately we sacked over a Bull Ant's nest, but lived to tell the tale.

Next day we came across an old fella living in a bark hut. He had a couple of old Nags, which we saddled, and spent the rest of the day exploring the bush.

This kind old man offered us digs for the night and fed us Pineapple out of tins that must have been 20 years old.

Even today, over so much time, I still remember his hospitality.

We got back four days later looking forward to mum's cooking.

Regards

Kim

Ok
About 12
3 mates with old pushies
Stradbroke island Blue and Brown lake
Tried to ride from the causeway to Pt Lookout
(those that know straddie will know how foolish that is)
All dirt roads past Dunwich
A couple of 'liberated' army ration packs
Some fishing line
No bike helmets.
No mobile phones/electronic games
No watches
3 shanghais

We ate well, we lived like kings in an old canvas tent. Went to bed when we were too lazy to stoke the fire. Came home without the rescue helicopter looking for us.

Did it almost every school holidays for 5 years.

Yep, I remember. 11 years old with my orange A style cotton/canvas tent, a metho stove and tins of something. We lived opposite a national park so I left home, walked for hours and set up camp on an ants nest. It was getting dark so I prepared a meal and went to bed early.

Being my first time I didn't realize how many noises there are in the bush.Made it home in 5 minutes flat with the old man having a great laugh over his Daniel Boone being frightened in the bush.

How things have changed.

Sludgie

PS we went back the next day to pickup the tent.
