I have found out that the rumours of 80 series GXL steel rims 16x8 can in fact leak. How this happens is the rim gets hairline cracks around the smallest radius of the inside. The main rim from what I can see has a main weld that joins the round section. A second plate that is welded to this round section is what you bolt the wheel to the hub. How the rims splits/cracks in this area is a concern, due to it being a solid section. I can only think that when the plate is welded it must fatigue the round section. The major worry is that if you placed a tube in your tyre, it over time might completely split the rim in half. Has anybody herd of this happening? I will weld up the crack and see if it hold pressure.

C&C,

Yeah this happened to my mate in his 80. he was advised to piff the rims and get others.he was lucky and got another good set s/hand but now they are like rocking horse chit, the 100 series IFS rims are heading the same way (rarity that is) buy some ROH rims or similar which are easier to get. one of his was 1/3 split ,it was really bad but held air well until he had a tyre change when this problem was exposed. cheers Paul

I'd be wary of welding them... the weld might become the strongest part, and create other failure points around them more catastrophically... I know they x-ray alloy rims after major accidents... maybe better to get this done and determine if they really are flaky...

Very common problem with 80's you 'could' weld them but it would be much safer to toss them as you would create further stress points which could lead to it letting go while driving. Not worth the risk IMHO.

Cruzin & Campin,
I had exacly the same priblem with two of my rims on my 80. It would slowly leak from 36psi to 28 over a week.

I noticed it when washing it ine day and noticed a bubble getting bigger..

The cost of getting the two fixed was going to be 50% of the price of ROH alloys so I got the alloys and flogged off the rims which eneded up paying for the lot. I did run tubes in the 2 rims for a while until I got rid of them.

Seems like the leak is right where the face meets the rim and theres a silicone type of seal theer as well.

Hey Rob and all other that have replied or even viewed our thread. I have got the cracks, there was two, welded by a professional welder and then he check for other cracks and found all was OK.
I'm taking the rim back to get the tyre put back on. I confident that the rim will be fine. I won't be putting a tube in, that will be the safest way to tell of this problem re-surfacing. The cost of welding and checking was minor and I don't have to change all my rims. Fingers crossed.

Tyre back on and no leaks. All is good. If any body is interested I can give contact details for the welder in the Yarra valley area. Fixing one rim was a fraction of the cost of placing 5 rims!

Cheers Bill
