Looking at the responses below, it looks like I've given the wrong info. It might pay to check though, as the van park I stayed at in Broken Hill last year was warning not to take fruit across the border at all, as there was a checkpoint set up on the border. Didn't go that way though ,so I never found out if that was true.

Sorry if I've made a mistake.

Yeah it's stupid, all other fruit fly inspection stations are within 20k of the state boarder but not this one.

Yunta is 200k from Broken Hill and the inspection station is another 60k from Yunta.

On one trip back from Canberra we got fruit at Wagga and found out you can not take it across the Hay Plains...we had to eat 6 apples and 6 bananas between two of us.

Although the Fruit Fly Checking Station is further down the road from B/Hill. it is still an offence to bring fruit and veg into that part of SA and the surrounding area of Broken Hill has the same restrictions.
In SA there are Inspectors patrolling the highways and they regularly set up a roadside checking station in addition to known fixed stations. If found in possesion they will fine you and confiscate restriced items.
Why would anyone want to risk introducing fruit fly or other pests into any area know to be free of such. The producers/growers are doing it hard enough now without the risk of having to loose a crop just because some stupid, arrogant, selfish, thoughtless tourist refused to comply with directions and laws. Check your facts, you CANNOT lawfully take fruit or veg into declared exclusion zones which include large areas around B/Hill and into SA. C H E C K this Link

DIO, there is nothing wrong with buying supplies in Broken Hil and taking them into SA as far as Yunta, and places north of there.
Check thisFruit Fly exclusion zone

The exclusion zone finishes at the SA border, going towards Adelaide.
Many people living the Broken Hill side of Yunta do their shopping in Broken Hil, including Fruit and Veg.

Steve, I sent an MM last night, must be still in cyberspace.

Plenty of camping space at Arkaroola, and a great observatory for watching the stars, don't miss it.

As Olcoolone says, the fruit check is further down the road from Yunta. F & V no problems.

Forgot the question about the dogs. I suggest an email to Arkaroola.
