Looks like a range of satellites over the top of the
Birdsville and the Simpson Peter. Global Star, Iridium, - your choice. Telstra wouldn't even put a tower in Innamncka for the EO gathering {;-)

John
Can't help with Next G as like you I've only recently changed over from CDMA.
From memory the closest coverage on CDMA was
Windorah. Then nothing till
Cunnamulla. There was talk of Jackson getting coverage but don't know as haven't been out there for over 12 months.
Birdsville doesn't have any mobile service.
On the western side of
the desert Roxby Downs is the closest.
HF or satphone are the only comms for
the desert, UHF CB is available on both sides, freqs and repeaters are listed in
the Desert Parks info booklet.

When trying to access the coverage map your pop up blocker may stop the maps frm loading. While you click on the map of Australia at the same time hold down your control key.

Nothing to do with pop-up blocker.....doesnt work either turned ON or OFF.
The maps will work fine on my computer in Firefox, not Internet Explorer (my default viewer of choice).

Was in
Birdsville in May. There was no mobile coverage. We came up from Innaminka and there was no coverage. I believe I saw a
sign saying that there was caverage at Windohra (?sp) but we were not going that way so who knows.

Just got back last week from a trip
Adelaide to
Longreach following the Diamantina, including Birsdville, Strez and
Oodnadatta Tracks. Basically no Next G coverage past
Lyndhurst (
Farina, Maree, Birsdville,
Innamincka,
Oodnadatta, Mt Dare, Finke). The only coverage we got was at
Winton and
Longreach. Hope that helps. Cheers, Neil

Certainly no coverage at
Windorah. Coming south from
Longreach coverage extends a reasonable way, but probably cuts out and hour or two north of
windorah.
We had no coverage from there south through to the southern end of the flinders (but we didn't go near
Leigh Creek, stayed on the eastern side).

Cmon guys you know that Next G is a croc o pit so why do you expect it to work?
Smoke signals work in the bush or try land line phones.
