Leaving for pennefather river tommorrow afternoon from
Townsville for my usual annual 3 week trip, has anyone been on the dirt that way recently that can advise how the roads are, towing a 4 m tinny on sturdy trailer so speeds are not high usually round the 85 km/hr. (slow and steady works for me) better to get there in one piece than not at all.
Any reports appreciated.
cheers
Bluespot.

Haven't been up that way for yonks but the track north of
Weipa was fairly slow going. I assume you're fishing....great spots.
Have fun and a safe journey.

Hi Bluespot,
Haven't been there for ages so can't help with that. Do you need a permit to get in there now? I never have in the past but I am not up to date (last there 1986). If so who issues them please?
Mike.

Mike, you can just go in and set up
camp as Laurie the
ranger from
Mapoon visits quite regularly and issues permits on
the spot, and he doesn't mind a drink either but keep in mind the total alcohol ban at Pennefather
Cheers Ray ( regular vistor to
Mapoon)

Was there last August. The gravel road section north of
Weipa should not give you any problems but when you get to the end going onto Pennefather beach itself that is where the track turns into VERY soft sand and you will have to let your tyres down on both trailer and car. There are a few different tracks to
the beach but they all end up on
the beach. With a boat Iwould suggest you
camp on the mouth of the river jist past the rangers house. He does not seem too conscerned about permits and never visited the campsites while Iwas there. The river is at the northern end of
the beach. It would be nice if you had more than 3 weeks but enjoy. Ithink there is a pic. of
the beach on my rig pics.
