Check fluid levels, check in drive after going through all gears.
I've always been advised to run the trans right at the high mark or a whisker above on 4wd's to prevent it running low when on steep slopes.

Get vehicle checked by Toyota . Same thing happened to
mine whilst I was 4wding up at
Stockton Beach . My reverse was gone and it was terminal and I also lost 4th and 5th gears . Lucky it was still under warranty and they replaced gear box totally. They never gave me a proper reasoning but it may have been transmission oil overheated. I got a new gearbox so I didn't really care. Yours might be on way out.
Mine had done only 8000kms when it happened. I will test it out at
Birdsville in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it won't break again . regards Peter

Forgot to mention you MUST use toyota tramsission oil. No other as it will make gearbox do funny things. It was okay in my old manual 80ser to increase to heavy duty gearbox oil but not the 5sp auto box and it must be Toyota oil as I was told. regards Peter
