There has been a few posts of late about taking C/Ts across the Simpson.
There's some good info in the current (todays) Westprint news for those interested.
I won't do a cut & paste- as there is a lot of info.

"good info"...? Where?

Mostly non-trailer travellers making assumptions that trailer travellers are churning up the track, or complaining about trailer-travellers holding them up or worse, blaming them for the different approaches on some dunes.

All this is rather rich and pure supposition.

Vehicles with and without trailers are churning up the track. Vehicles with and without trailers are travelling with too high pressures and getting bogged.
Vehicles with and without trailers for legitimate (dangerous soft tops etc.) and illegitimate reasons ("My truck can get up that dune") make new approaches on difficult dunes.

People with trailers need to be prepared, but with good preparation, low pressures and responsible driving trailer travelling is safer and easier.

Thank you! I couldn't have said it better myself.

I'm fairly sure that one of the doyans of the Simpson Desert, (Jol Flemming), is quite willing to take folk with trailers across the Simpson on his tag-along trips. Of course, I'll willingly stand corrected if I am wrong...and I mean no malice by making this statement.

The potential exists (IMHO) for a non-trailer-towing vehicle to much more damage to the dunes if they refuse to alter their tyre pressures according to the conditions.

We are about to leave for Birdsville and a Simpson Crossing next saturday and a few of us will be towing trailers. We are well aware of the necessities of this trip and will be lowering our pressures before we embark over Big Red (or Little Red as the case will probably be). I believe in doing as little damage to the environment as possible.

That's a good follow up Roachie.

Tyre pressures are an important thing, when making the crossing.

The other thing to drive home here is, to take your time.
Why go there, to race across, and miss the beauty of the place.

A mate of mine, once told me that he did it in 2 days, and my reply was " WHY ? ".. and What did you see..

Then he wonders why he had vehicle troubles.

Safe travels, and watch those bug type things in Dalhousie Springs...... they chewed/bit SWMBO like there was no tomorrow.. 4 days of sheer hell for Lyn.

Drove her, and me nuts....Finally Richard and Gemma from Arkaringa Station, gave us some relief, with some cream they had gotten from Flying Doctor, oversupply.

Cheers Mate

After just getting back from the Simpon (and I believe the last group out after the recent rains because the roads were closed) I am say 100% that any vehicle with a camper trailer would still be in the desert weeks later. There were some lakes that we only just got thru while one or two we had to drive around.

If you are looking at going fairly soon I would plan for another place to go. It's a mess there at the moment.

G'day all - Speaking from personal experience, I went into the simpson from birdsville 8 days ago in what I consider a very formidable set up LC and C/T (see my members page for a bit of detail)

We went on our own and never planned on actually crossing the simpson. We just wanted to get out amongst it for a little while and camp a couple of nights. If the going got too tough for our set up, rather than risk vehicle damage or cause environmental damage, we'd pull up. And that's exactly what we did.

We made it over Big red (not the small crest) first go, so I considered that to be a reasonable sign to push on. But an hour or so later, when we hit an allready severly chopped up dune with whoops in it that bogged us on the first go. We decided that was far enough and set up camp.

We loved our time there and didn't make it back over big red without a quick snatch over the crest from some guys we caught up with on the way back.

IMHO, a well set up vehicle, with low tyre pressure (I started off at 25 but was at 20 pretty soon after!) in convoy with some help should be able to cross OK without doing damage. Just take it easy and when she bogs a little, get another in front of you to tug you through rather then "ploughing" on.
Cheers
