Hi We are planning to go to Uluru in september. I will be towing Jayco camper trailer and the Plenty Highway is the only section of dirt road we will be driving on to get there from Brisbane. Do I need or should I be taking extra spare? Thanks.

It is always a good move to carry the 2nd spare, just in case. The road is getting remote and tyres not always easy to get. Also pays to carry good quality tubless repair kits. Regards TONY

Lots of things to consider. Speed of travel, quality, wear & construction of tyres, load of vehicle/camper & then do you have the equipment & experience to repair punctures ? 2 tyres are certainly not required in most cases but just ensure you have your bases covered should you get a couple as obviously it's a fair way between stops.
Cheers Craig..........

You used to be able to get repairs to tyres (and buy a new one if necessary) at Tobermorey but the station has now gone back to being private. No matter which direction you're travelling in tyre repair is available at Boulia on one side and Alice Springs on the other. That's a long way and anyone who doesn't carry and extra spare as well as a puncture repair kit is seriously pushing their luck.

Do they do any repairs at Gemtree? Was pretty busy there mid 2003. Plenty Hwy had plenty of loose rocks on the surface. Had one the size of a large grapefruit hit under the car then under the camper trailer hitting the alum cheq plate guard over the water tank putting a huge dent in it. No flats tyres though.
When travel with the camper trailer I have three complete spares! Than if you need to you can dump the trailer and use those two wheels if needed giving a total of five.

Glen.

Etherwarrior - travelled the plenty highway in 1992 with an Aussie swag camper trailer with only one spare - no problems - travelled it again in 2003 with a swagman off road camper with only one spare - no problems. Both trips were completed with one other vehicle. If you have good tyres you should not encounter any problems.

So based on two trips no one needs to carry two spares in the outback. Thats good to know. But unfortunatly thats not information I would give out as advice. As said above you are pushing your luck. I have had two tyres go on a fairly good remote road in the wet season. Had to drive home on the rim because I did not have a 2nd spare. Good advice is to carry one.

Etherwarrior

I just don't travel remote roads with just one spare, it may be needed just once in a lifetime but you don't want that experience, if carrying an extra spare can prevent it.

Just carry a tire case and tube to keep the weight down, but don't leave home without it.

Etherwarrior,
throughout our Oz trip, we carried 2 spares, 1 carcass and tyrelever repair kit. Both trailer and truck were the same stud pattern. We were running Cooper AT's in the Light Truck form, and had only 1 puncture in 22,000km - and that was at Laura on the Cape when I picked a bloody TEK Screw!
I later plugged the Cooper at Cairns, and it served me for another 4 years until it was replaced.
Peace of mind - take the second spare or at least a repair kit. AND make sure you know how to use it before you go!

Cheers, Matt

Id be taking one for the jayco and one for the car....its a nasty stretch of road but tyre pressure and all the other factors like others have said play a major part.

Just take repair kits to follow up maybe....

have recommended for years when setting up vehicles long trips, carry second spare loose, of course you need compressor and levers, use the second spares as containers for recovery equip, etc, you are then only carrying weight of tyre cases, and not wasting space.
You can usually buy a good case for a second spare at 4wd tyre dealers, loose for $30 approx, just inspect carefully for damage, carry a tube to make it easy to inflate, keep tube wrapped in black plastic so it does not deteriate, use lanolin on rim to make it easy to bead out and stop corrosion when fitting
