Be aware that shipping internationally of Garmin products by Amazon and its subsidiaries (of which warehousedeals is one of them) "can" be an issue. I'm not sure if it is of all Garmin products on Amazon, however most will list that they can only ship in the USA. Something to be aware of before going through the annoying process of signing up with Amazon to buy from another site.

Has anyone in Australia actually bought one of these products or another Garmin one FROM AMAZON inparticular?

I havent bought a Garmin but did buy a Lowrance Globalmap 3000 for my boat Cost me $800 against $2500 here.

Warranty is a problem as it has to go back to country of origin usually.
Same with most things not bought thru Aussie distributors.

Amazon will ship worldwide but not all the Amazon "stores" will

The postage is usually quite reasonable compared to some sellers I have dealt with that charged $50US to post a cellphone.

I think the biggest problem with these would be that the "street navigator" software is going to cover the USA. To buy Street Navigator for a Garmin is about $270. The off road side will be handled with Shonkymaps or T4A. You could also buy Oztopo for $229.
As for warranty, I'm not sure. I've just bought a GPSMAP 60Cx off Ebay, from an Aust business, with a factory warranty. The GPS has the Americas basemap, so I hope I don't have issues as it's obviously not the Aust version. I knew this when I bought it, but as Garmin maps are ordinary anyway, I was always going to run Shonky or T4A.
I think (but I could be wrong0 that the Garmin 260W can run off road maps and is around $450. This might be a better bet if you want something to use for street navigation as well as offroad.

How do we get shonky or T4A maps...do we buy them over the net or what?

I have a Nuvi 760..heading up North WA next month...I suppose these extra maps could be handy!

Andrew

Free Shonkymaps.

A rather large but a very wothwhile addition to any mapset - 340MB.
Use a download manager to prevent any disappointing download issues.

Tracks 4 Australia is also free and can be downloaded here:

GPSOZ

It's a much smaller download than Shonkymaps, but doesn't appear to have as much detail.

I've downloaded both but haven't had a chance to use either yet.

If you have a stable, somewhat fast, broadband connection, then you don't need to worry about this IMO.

A "download manager" essentially manages any downloads, allowing you to resume any download if disconnected (in most cases), error checks the file, as well as maximising the download session to some degree by ensuring maximum speed and/or downloading in "off-peak" periods.

If you have never had issues before with largish files, then i wouldn't worry about it too much. Not a requirement at all. Just download the 340mb file and enjoy. :-)

Hi

I have just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 760 and loaded Shonky Maps.

If you don't want to download you can ring Nick at Octopac 08 9274 2374 and he will post it on disc for $5. The disc also contains T4A. Can't complain about that. Further info can be found at gpsaustralia.net.

Hope that helps. I am not associated with the above in any way in case anyone wants to know :-)

Shonky is a perfect offroad companion better than T4A in my opinion.

I have been looking at the 60CSx but didnt think about the things having a US base map, might strike them further off the list then.

Bonz, if you buy an Australian one it should have the "Pacific" basemap. This would have more detail than US one. Mine has the US one as it came from Ebay and must have been an import.

As far as off road driving though, Garmin base maps seem to be fairly poor in detail.

Running Shonky should negate the poor quality of the base map shouldn't it? I hope it will anyway.

I run City navigator on mine and I find it pretty good offroad, but shonky is even better, it has LOTS more tracks, but I haven't used it to try and auto-navigate, it probably wont do it, but the detail is fantastic.

The base maps are quite average and you have to use something else I have found.

Fellas, when loading the Shonky maps...do you have to load it to an SD card or just hook straight into the Nuvi?

cheers

Andrew, the instructions for my GPSMAP60Cx say that you can do it either way. There's some directions under the help menu of Mapsource. I'm assuming that Nuvi's come with a version of this.

I haven't actually transferred Shonky across to mine yet, so I can't explain how it is done.

Scubadoo and others

I have been trying to download Shonkymaps this afternoon, and tonight. I have Bigpond unlimited Broadband connection.

But the download starts and after about 5% of the Zip file, a message displays saying that Internet Explorer cannot download, the server has been reset and I get zapped out of the internet.

What does that mean?

David, I downloaded the file titled 3.51.zip, last week with no problems. I also use Bigpond.

Hi

I have loaded Shonky both ways, to the Nuvi (SD card has to be inserted) and direct to the SD card without a problem.

Just load Shonky into Mapsource, select the maps you require, in my case I only selected WA, then select "send to device".

Worked ok for me.

Graeme W and Rowdy6032 & others

I will try again tonight, but on the file transfer screen the estimated tme was somthing like 15 hours.

I was trying the 3.51.zip file, so unless Shonky had problems with their server, I cannot understand why I could not download.

I own a Garmin 260W with Oztopo, but not really impressed with that (too many major trails in NSW missing) and want to see if Shonky is any better.

How long did it take you to download by broadband?

Andrew

As mentioned in my original post try a download manager.
Here is a good free one -Orbit Downloader.

Install the software and use it to download shonkymaps. As least after a crash/failure you can resume the part download without having to start from scratch each time.
