I am a total novice camper and at the moment own no gear at all but am planning on starting to take the family
camping to save money on expensive accommodation etc.
I walked in to the local BCF this week and looked at a couple of oztrail tents, specifically the 9+3.
What is the general feeling on the quality of the oztrail brand and would this tent be ok for a couple of weekends a year and maybe a week on Fraser island now and again?
Cheers for your help guys.

My first OzTrail had normal sewn seams and did occasionally leak. My current one has taped seams and doesn't leak a drop.
Had a zipper go, but was fixed under warranty.
I use an old plastic tarp, which I have cut to size, placed underneath the floor as added protection to the tent floor. Also gives a base to fold the tent up on when it's been wet.

G'day,
do you mean the tourer 9? just the ticket for the usage you describe. i have had the tourer 10 plus in the past, it never leaked
water save near the door sometimes, but negligible really.
mine got hammered with lots of use and four sprogs. weaker floor so grab some shade cloth for under the tent.good value for your intended use but i wore it out soon enough. get a tarp for a proper awning shelter at the front and you'll be laughing.

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrighto,
okay mate. cannot comment on that specifically sorry. personally, dome tents drive me mad with all those bloody snappy pole pieces. my gig is a bit more simplistic i guess. anyway, good luck and good on you for getting out there.

Gotta agree with Bushfix, all those bendy poles will drive you nuts before too long.

Hello Cane Toad,
I bought a large tent when the three kids were quite
young. Later on I got rid of it and bought a camper trailer as the older the kids got the more gear needed to be taken away on holidays.
If you go with the tent, think ahead ...... my kids at age 10 opted to bail out into pup tents of their own. They took these tents away on school excursions, scouting ventures etc. Setting up their own tent is was a useful thing for them to do on holidays. Keeping it tidy was the biggest challenge !
If you go with the one tent, my best advice is stay away from the large dome type tents. I've had two of them and I know they are a challenge in the wind and they don't take punishment like a canvas tent. From personal experience, I know that a flimsy tent won't stand up to the hungry dingoes and goannas on Fraser Island.
I would be looking at a framed tent such as the Black Wolf or the OzTent or the COI Tourer, the latter being a middle-weight canvas tourist tent with an extension out the back and similar in weight to the dome tent you've looked at.
Happy hunting !
Robin

I had a oz trail for probably 6 years and it really copped a flogin up down that many times was probably equivelant to the avarage 15-20 years of normal
camping.
Got a bit thin and seeing it was such a good tent (with minimal leaks) I thought I'd get another. I took it to the
Vic High Country and got soaked in it.
Oz trail are definately losing the plot. Chucked it to the back of the shed and bought an Outdoor connections tent. Had trouble with the zip initially but once that was sorted out is great.
Have a look at those as
well. Pleasantly surpised at the make and quality and affordable.

Thanks for your input mate. It seems to me that everybodys experiences with oztrail are different. I am on a strict budget having 4
young kids so wont be able to push out as far as the more expensive brands so will probably end up with a budget tent.
I hope I dont buy a lemon and get wet...
