I seem to have someone (most likely kids) in the neighbourhood that likes to lock in my passenger side hub.
Is there any ill effects of driving around in 2wd with just 1 hub locked in?? As it is beginning to be a PITA to check every time I get in the Cruiser to go for a drive.

Hi probably not do any thing in the short term.
I would try filling the locking switch with a good dollop of thick molly grease or some black sticky bitumen base product and that may deter the little pest when gets a good coating of grease on his hands! LOL.

I think you'll find something in your owners manual regarding locking one hub only. It's a no no no no :)))

With only one hub locked you will eventually wear out your small pinion gears in the centre of the diff. They will be rotating all the time instead of just when you are turning. They are not designed to rotate all the time. If both hubs are locked only the large ring gear and drive pinion will be turning. These have larger bearings and are designed to do this. Have a look here

Don't ask me but it says it quite plainly in the Hilux manual. I'm quite happy to take the manufacturers advice over some of the 'experts' on an internet

Hi
With many years of using 4WD on the farm fam Series 1 Landrover on, I have found at times a hub is not or not been locked inadvertently, never had any damage that I am aware of because of that. Usually you wonder why the 4WD isn't working get out check hubs and find that one is not engaged, for some reason it is usually the LH. The only damage to a hub that I can recall is with a Warn Hub on an old 3 speed Landcruiser, to engage you pulled out the lever rotated it 1/2 turn and only one lever was engaged, a touch of serious work and the paule sheared off. Had another guy shear off the front diff pinion once, completely denied that the back
wheels were spinning madly when he engaged 4WD.
Don't know about the newer 4WD but it was recommended that the hubs be run in gear occasionally for lubrication purposes.
I would think the chances of doing damage on road would be slim.

Go to the chemist and buy some silver nitrate and apply it to the hubs, then whoever is playing with your hubs will end up with black fingers. It takes ages for it to wear off. DON"T forget to wear gloves if you are playing with the hubs.

Get auto hubs al la Nissan, they will need a wheel nut socket to manually lock them then.

A friend had wired up his car to deliver quite a large shock if it was touched. It was of course illegal but it did have a marked effect on the neighbours dog who kept bleep on his wheels ;-)
