Hi again
Well I have today pulled the autotune off the car. I checked the small earth from inside the tuner to the base plate, that looked ok. I replaced the large braided earth strap from the base plate to the vehicle. I think the earth is good as when I test with a multimeter from the base plate to the vehicle I get continuity (hope I am doing that right?)
I even changed the antenna to a brand new stainless (which I needed to purchase anyway)
Still have the same issue, tune fails. On some occassions you can hear the tuner doing its thing and trying to tune, on others it just fails immediately.
Any suggestion as to where to look next or is it now a case of taking the autotune down to someone like Terry at Terlin to see what he can do with it?
Thanks

Have you checked continuity between the coax recepticle (SO239) and the base plate ? Do you have any sort of multimeter availiable to you ?
Check the coax for continuity and shorts.
Does it tune at any frequency ?
Is it a new install or has it just happened ?

Hi Footy
Not a new install. Has been in for almost 4 years now and one day just started playing up. The reason I replaced the earth braid was that it was almo0st torn through, so thought that was the most likely issue.
No it does not tune at any frequency at all any more.
I still have to check things between the radio itself and the antenna, which I will do as soon as I can get a chance in between the rain showers.

There is another small earth wire between the base sections that a lot of people forget about, as footloose said check resistance at the SO239 / PL259 connection on the antenna and the vehicle.

Richard,
I had a similar problem with my 9350 a couple of years ago. First of all it would 'tune fail' only occasionally, then after a while, it got worse and worse, to the point where it would not tune at all. This all happened over a couple of months.
Like you I looked for all the 'easy' fixes first, then, with no success, I pulled the whole thing apart, cleaned all the connections inside the thing, particulary the copper windings along which the 'tuning' slug runs. Put it all back together and hoped for the best and haven't had any trouble since.
I'm not saying this will fix yours, but it's worth a try if you're confident of pulling it apart yourself. If you do, careful no to lose the tiny screws that abound in this antenna!
Cheers,
Mark
Ps Some good instructions on the Oz Radio site - google it.

Cant se the serial in the dark but it is a "D" series so not likely to have the issues that the earlier ones were having, and besides it has workd fine for the past 4 years....

A and B's had some issues and most have been upgraded by now.
C and D's seem OK.

OK I have installed the new earth braid and the antenna. The radio does now tune, but not as soon as it is turned on. It seems to need to be on for about 10 minutes before it will actually tune. If you try to tune as soon as it is tunred on, nothing much happens. Once it has sat powered for about 10 minutes it appears to tune across all 5 VKS frequencies.
I will do some more testing over this week, but if this gives anyone any further clues as to why this is happening I would be keen to hear them :)
