Will this run oziexplorer ok on the Vista as it seems a good price for a new laptop for us to use as moving maps and downloading our photos to cd when on our travels.
Thanks
Christian

The computer will run Ozi Explorer but don't know if Ozi Explorer is compatible with Windows Vista.
A lot of software will not work properly on Vista.
I would get them to load Windows XP as it is a much better operation system.
Next year Microsoft will release Windows 7 as a replacement for Vista and XP....Microsoft are having big problems with Vista.
Windows XP retail pack will be no longer available after the end of July 2008 but it will still be available on new machines until September 2009.

Christian,
I have been running OziExplorer on Vista Home Premium OS for over 12 months. The Ozi home page has a couple of tips regarding installation. I have had no problems with Vista as a clean install on a new PC. I think that most complaints come from people trying to upgrade older PCs. I did have to replace an old flat bed scanner because the drivers were not available in Vista. (new scanner is heaps better anyway)
As far as those cheap laptops go, I would be interested to see how they survive in the harsh environment that off roaders would take them. It would be nice for planning
routes on Ozi and for checking photos etc. You do need at least 2Gig RAM and a decent video card to operate Home Premium, but the "Basic" is less demanding.

I use a HP Travel Companion, modified to operate OziCE and it is brilliant so far on test. We are about to head north to see how it goes in the rough. Of course paper maps and careful navigation are the ultimate fallback.

not 100% sure but my ACER came with either 100$ cash back or a 2 year warranty which should solve any off roading problems

Ozi explorer is compatable with Vista so you should have no problems, yes the laptop will run ozi easily as ozi does not require vast amounts of memory or resourses, I actually bought a EEE PC by ASUS and find them a better machine and half the size, Solid State hard drives can handle the day to day shaking and vibrations in the bush, It will do everything a big machine but is so much more compact, just my 2 bobs worth
cheers

Yep, I was looking at a mate's Acer the other day. Nice size for in-vehicle use, and I believe the later versions have a bigger screen in the same size case (the earlier screen was quite a bit smaller than the case). And the EE2prom solid state hard drive is a big plus, not only for ruggedness, but for power consumption. I understand that the laptop runs for several hours on internal batteries.
My only concern is how long the EE2prom will last, as it used to good for only about 100,000 r/w cycles. Perhaps technology has improved to prove me wrong.

You won't be able to get them to load XP as XP is basically finished. Only some machines still selling with Xp, and you may need to pay more for XP as some machines can be rolled back to XP if they come with the XP roll back CD's. Best to stay with Vista
