I'm heading off to Anne Beadell Hwy in August and am contemplating the Mount Davies Rd and back round NE to Kulgera.
Has anybody been through this way and know of access and road conditions.
Cheers Paul

I may stand corrected on this information.
A track & permit report was issued either with a recent Track Watch, VKS737 or TLCV magazine. It stated that permits were not being issued for this track as it basically no longer exists.

Cheers, Tony.

Contrary to what has been posted above the Mt Davies track (I am told by a reliable source) is in good condition but could be ovegrown at the southern end.

It is unlikely that you will be granted a permit to access this track as it goes through Sacred Mens Business(Aboriginal) country. South Australia is loath to issue permits through any of the Pit-lands.

Hi Willem. Thank you for updating my information which was in the TLCV May 2008 club magazine - reprinted from the TLC NSW.
This poses a question.
Are there any roads or tracks that you are aware of in the Pit-lands that are open - either public or permit?

Cheers, Tony.

Yep a mate of mine drives that road as part of his work in the area.

I am not aware of any roads/tracks which are open to access by permit apart from the one to Mintabe.

Cheers

I'm not so sure about your observation there Willem...

To my knowledge of the 1000 odd applications to APY in 2006/7 only 3 were rejected...

And when I was in the GVD a month or so ago, a mob from a (I think) Geraldton Club was heading up there and had a permit - or said they did.

So, young fella, where can I access these purported figures?

Maybe permits approved maybe for work related purposes and not recreational

We came across someone with a permit to travel the above but decided not to, he was with a group of 5 vehicles when we got the Anne's there where fresh tracks leading up the track (me old bush tracker) LOL.

And we heard them on the skeds at night but they where being cryptic on the where abouts 250 k south og SGC.

Cheers

Spoke to a fella with a permit prior to travelling the Mt Davies road for May this year. My understanding is the southern half of the track is difficult to navigate, sometimes dissapearing altogether. Permits are only issued to people the locals personally know & still require a paid guide to travel with them from Coober Pedy. He has been trying to gain greater access to this & other Aboriginal areas for 4 wheel drive Victoria members with varying success. We will be trying next year to get a permit ourselves through him if possible.

Iy looks like the track will be well worn by now, if all the 4WD's with permits get through.

I'm told the top half of the track is well worn as it leads to an Aboriginal settlement but the bottom half is rarely trafficked as they simply don't hand permits out unless you know someone.
The fact that travellers are saying they have permits but are "being cryptic on the where abouts" (as above) indicates to me some are going where they shouldn't & when found in there besides facing severe penalties are probably just stuffing up the opportunities for those trying to get access legitimately. The fact this route does not feature in any trip notes or magazine that I've seen probably indicates those doing it would rather not advertise they were there ;-)
