Has anyone seen a HF autotune mounted anywhere on a tray body ute other than on the bullbar?

Hi Lex M
I have mounted my Barrett Autotune to the front left corner of tray on my Patrol. I made a bracket out of 50x50x5mm angle to bring the antenna out from the tray about 50mm toward the front of veh so that it clears the barwork. Sorry I cant send Photo as I am in Darwin, although I may be able to organise something in a day or so. No problems with comms at all, but if you make a bracket make sure you leave room to open your door as it is pretty close ie 30mm

Thanks for that. That's sorta what I was thinking of doing but I've never seen one there. A couple of questions if I may.
Why did you decide on the left side?
Did you mount it to the tray only or did you brace it to the chassis or whatever?
Is it a steel tray or aluminium?

Thanks gain.

I mounted mine on the cab guard drivers side (see photo taken before we headed away this year)).......had significant problems sending a strong signal and yet was able to receive very well from all over.

I rang Barrett and they said the arial starts from the base of the auto tune not from the wip up and I should move it clear of the roof...I did this for the rest of our trip through the Kimberleys and had no problem after that...I didnt like it up there but it worked perfectly

still confuses me because for the rest of the trip I looked at every HF mount on any vehicle and they were mostly mounted lower ( being on the spare wheel carrier in most cases) with the wip only protruding above the roof line

I intend to follow up when I get a chance and the comment from Carrine? has made me even more perplexed

I will watch this post with interest

Bungarra,
I too was looking at the options to install my Barrett autotune. The way it was explained to me by Electric Bug, was that the Barrett autotune radiates its signal from the casing join upwards and for best transmission, you need clearance from any metalwork at a 45degree angle in all directions from this point upwards. So you need more clearance at the top of the antenna, than the 160mm specified lower down.

With a mount on the back of a stationwagon, the sloping rear glass allows this clearance. If you mount against a vertical side, such as a metal canopy, then you either need to space the antenna further out, and tilt the antenna away from the canopy to get this clearance. Fibreglass canopies do not have this issue.

I installed mine on the back of the canopy, and it leans away. I can also loosen my custom bracket to raise the antenna, so it has good clearance away from the canopy. In the position that you have yours, I have seen people with a swing bracket or a mechanism to raise the autotune, to obtain good clearance.

Receiving is not an issue, but having it close to metalwork will affect the transmission of signals.

Cheers
Phil

Hi Lex and Bungarra
I mounted antenna on left as is more out of way than the right side of veh. I am going to try and import a photo wasnt sure I had one but this mounted on old veh but is still same tray. A slide on camper is usually fitted. I have also put a brace from antenna base to bottom of tray (not fitted on this photo)Image Could Not Be Found

Hi Carree

Picture is perfect thanks...leaves me a little confused as if you look at the picture of my rig my antennae is almost identical in position to yours........

Comments from Phil (see earlier response) made a lot of sense but then your pic with your placement leaves me a little bewildered as yours works......why doesnt mine?

Not an issue with my set because as soon as I sit it well above the roof line it is perfect!

my rear canopy is made of aluminium

thanks

i put mine on the rear right of the tray on a lift up hinge. it just swings out of the way when i need to drop the tray sides. i put it on the Right so i can see the whip when i go under trees or a low drive-thru ( mainly bottle shop !).

i can email you some pics if you give me your address. the mount also acts as a step to get to the top of my canopy.

Got mine mounted horizontally behind the top bar of the tray. The spares fit in underneath and the camper behind. You lose a lot of signal strength on transmission with it horizontal but it folds up to the vertical position if required. Having said that have contacted Alice base from the Coorong in SA before with the antenna down. Just depends on conditions. Once up get a very even distribution and excelent signal strngth. Was a custom construction from Phil at Electric Bug.

Codan has done plenty of research on antenna placement and the bottom line is if there is body work nearby your transmitted signal is badly degraded in certain directions. While you may be able to "point" your aerial in the right direction you may not know the direction of a station you are trying to call.
