Hi all been reading the achived threads about the Navara D40 Clucth problems. In particiular the thread posted by macca172 thread no 44605 Apr 22, 2007.
I also own a D40 Navara now 12 months old, I have experienced since new the acrid smell of burning clutch intermittently after driving around town and I would like to think I'm a good driver and don't abuse my clutch. Now feeling better after reading these threads and other websites that it appears to be a more of a common problem not just
mine.
I took it on
the beach for the first time in April this year and experienced the acrid smell and some smoke from the clutch after it got stuck in the soft stuff after about 1min of back and
forth motion trying to get out and only getting deeper when the smoke appeared I stopped to let it cool and eventually got going again with the help of a good samartian who snatched me out. For the next two days no clutch problems a bit of a smell nothing out of the ordinary in my prior experience. The third day the clutch started to slip. I decieded to turn around head back to
camp to to ensure I could get off
the beach the next day. Once I hit the black top I could not get out of 1st gear. Managed to get it to the local nissan dealer once stopped had to be pushed into the worshop. Where they could not fix it until tree days time so I had it towed back to my dealer in
Brisbane where it was found to have failed (12000km on clock) and Nissan replaced under warranty. Still experiencing smell form new clutch and again when on
the beach last week under no load in soft sand was getting smell again.
I also have an inaccuracy of 7-8km an hour on my speedo. So doing 93kph when reading 100km.
Would love to know if anybody has had Nissan offer a way to fix solve either of the above mentioned problems since the original thread was posted.

Hi Mark,
Recently bought a new NAVARA D40 and I instanltly felt that our speedo is not recording the correct speed.
Often found myself doing 30 km over speed limit, with no hesitation.Quickly also found out that you dont recieve very good fuel economy .
I mentioned it to my husband(who owns a nissan patrol), he said Ive just got a lead foot, until he had a chance to drive it, and now he's convinced there is a problem.
Had the vechicle in for its 1000 km service, and our clutch needed to be adjusted.I could even work that one out.
I mentioned about the speedo and they just said I was just used to driving my other car (
sedan). My local nissan dealers are not up to speed with customer service.
Havent had a chance to
test it out in 4wd yet. Been to busy on the
farm but hope to hook the van on in the next few weeks and head north, doin abit of campin and lookin around in the outback.

I have the D40 manual.
I have not had any problems with the clutch. I have not noticed speedo either.
A mate of a mate has a D40 and tows a boat @2.5T. He reverses the boat up
hill on his driveway and has done 3 clutchs under warranty. I sort of put it down to riding the clutch as you would have to.
Yours does not sound right. I have NO smell at all even when towing a 1.5 T trailer - where riding the clutch is necessary at times.
I have noticed in 4x4 mags that there is an after market heavy duty clutch made for the D40 (probably saw the market). Expensive option when the original should work properly considering the D40 has a towing capacity of 3T.
Good luck.
