Any lead where I can find some good illustrations on tyre footprints when pressures are reduced??
I saw one a while back but can't seem to locate it. Have done a Google but nothing suitable.
I'm giving a seminar on offroad/sand driving to a group of Rural Fire brigades this evening...(yes- I am a VETAB instructor for OH&S accreditation).

I think 4wd Monthly just did an article in the past couple of issues about tyre sizes and the respective footprint sizes.

The current one I think,

It compares 31's with 33's and 35's

It has the 6 wheeler Missan on the cover

See Here for cover details

Signman,

I saw the article in one of the VKS member magazines we receive. Think it was one from last year.

I have four scans of actual tyre prints that are quite interesting and were in a mag a few years ago.

I can send them if you email me.

Not illustrations, but if you want some numbers, then Willem and I compared MRF with Silent Armour on thread 46211.

I know it is a bit late now, Signman......Is it worthwhile using the actual vehicles and tyres they will encounter and physically setting up a testpad to show them this in the flesh? I know many a session i have conducted on various subjects, the hands-on approach works much better than some "slide on a wall" diagram.

I'm not sure of the logistics on how to do it....would require some planning to work though.

Just a (left-field) thought?

Thanks for your input Andrew..
We did actually start to set up a tanker for actual scenarios..
It was a fully loaded 4x4 tanker- with 3000 litres of water..
results weren't conclusive, but I'll spend a bit more time to play with pressures/footprints..
Might start with one of the officers Prados and work up from there !!

A small pad with wettish sand in it perhaps and a jacking system for the vehicle?

Whilst it would take longer to explain, it would possibly hit the spot when it comes to understanding the principles of tyre deflation.

Hey Signman found that old 4wd monthly. No. 59 Nov 2003.
If you would prefer I am happy to fax. Would need a number though. It compares 285/75/16 and standard 750/16 from 10 psi to 35 psi and a lot of work with a jack and an ink roller.
Hope this useful for you. I'm at work all day today so if you on the air we can get it done.
Cheers Paul
