I'm looking at replacing the head and having new rings etc done on the motor. This will cost aroung $2,500. The motor is running fine but is down a bit in compression and overheats under heavy load. All other options finished, we have decided that it's a small crack in the head.

Brother-in-Law has a reconditioned motor still in plastic. It need a set of 'push rods' [I think] otherwise ready to go. He wants $3,300 for that.

What's the best option? The current motor is turbo charged, so that will be moved over if need be. Of course I can sell the current motor as a 'goer' for perhaps $800?

Ideas?

Yeah.. the V8 diesel has to wait a couple of summers yet...Royce www.funshow.com.au

Hi Royce,

I'd go for the $3300 motor still wrapped in plastic and get a pro to transfer the turbo. If you are only replacing the head and rings then there are still questions as to crank, gudgeon, pistons, bearings etc in the long motor that may need looking at. You may be able to get some money back for your old engine, as you say. Once you've got the reco motor in, you are in the swim for the next 500,000K :-)Cheers, Willem

Yea I'd go along with that..

You cant get better than that!! $2500 for reco sounds cheap too... new pistons rings sleeves etc? or just rings and gaskets?

Mmmm the old saying comes to mind here, never buy anything or sell anything to a family member.... May save more than it will cost.
Wonder how much a 12ht would be? or a 1hz??

I'd also agree with that.... If something goes pearshaped.. could get nasty.

I faced this question last year.

Would have cost more to go to 1HZ or other as the gearbox needs to be changed as well.

If i had my time (2 years ago, before the turbo went on) and if i knew that the motor was only 12 months behind, I would have gome for the Chev V8, hindsight is great.

I went for a whole reco engine, after a few teething problems (due to the reconditioner in Bris), my local mechanic got it sorted, took around 20k to run in, but now it is sweet, very happy 2H with DTS owner.
