Hi All,
am new to this site. Just bought a '92 model 6 cylinder 4.2L diesel motor Toyota Coaster in preparation for a 12 month break from work to take the family on an anticlockwise lap of the country leaving mid-2009. Would like to make contact with fellow Coaster owners to discuss the trip and vehicles. The 1HZ motor is the same i believe as that which is installed in Toyota Landcruisers? All correspondence greatly appreciated. Thanks all for your time.

Hi Evosheas,

I don't own one but have driven one years ago as a school bus - used to go like a beauty. But I think they run a 24v system. If so only implication is for any 12v accessories you want to operate.
But they are a great vehicle - should make a good camper.
All the best for your trip next year.
Cheers,
Glen

Im the same as saharaman driven them as school buses, but have also driven them as a bus between cairns and karumba and ahve found heat affects them when pulling a full weight ie about 5 tonne but other than that great, the 24 volt can be an issue if a jump start is needed. Col

Hi Evosheas

I have a 1987 Coaster that I'm doing up. It has the 2H land cruiser motor. The 1HZ is a land cruiser motor as well.
They are 24v but I installed a 24v to 12v reducer to run the radio etc. I have done a few small trips but nothing major as yet.

Thanks all for the replies, I am assuming that the 24 volts comes from joining two 12 volt batteries in series. If i take a direct line from one positive terminal, is that likely to give me 12 volts? Whaddayareckon?

If you take 12v directly from one of the batteries in a 24V system you may cause the premature failure of that battery.

as the battery you are drawing off, wont be charging at the same rate as the other. It will work for a while, then it will eventually die.

Redarc make a charge equaliser, which rectifies this problem and is a very good way to tap 12v off a 24v system.

I have a 24v safari (patrol) and use a 24 -12v 30A battery charger to run a 2rd battery (100AH AGM). works a treat.

There used to be a guy on this forum who had a Coaster bus and I'm sure he would have helped you with any of your questions, but . . . . unfortunately, we're not allowed to mention him.
