I have just done a search on Geocaching and found that there are a few posts that mention this in one form or another. I am interested in just how many of us in this forum are adherants? I know that I have been to places through this activity that I would have driven past otherwise. One such place is at S 29° 24.560 E 136° 48.236 near Coward Springs, must be the loneliest burial spot in Australia.

Not me

Geocaching is on a par with Confluencing. Just silly little games people play out in the bush.....hahahahaha

Sure, if you have nothing better to do, then it might occupy your mind for a short while, but is there any point to it????

Cunfluencing, bit like the pointless exercise of going to geograhical centres ;-) I suppose at least a Geocach has a greater chance of being at an interesting location, only problem it's like a mystery date, you don't know what you're going to get until you arrive :-)

Bit harsh Willem
its just an excuse to go out bush with a GPS and search around
---- sort of like prospecting. dont doit myself but been thinking bout seeing if theres any hidden up in the Perth hills. usually I just cruise aimlessly around the tracks there - the idea of searching for somethig ounds OK

Went to Queen Victoria Springs and afterwards found it has the longest undiscovered Geocache in Australia

A very sad response Willem. A very quick judgement of an activity that you obviously don't understand.

Geocaching is many things, but it is especially an activity of the mind. Geocachers will also tell you that their silly little game has taken them to many places that they never knew existed, not only in the bush, but also little known, but fascinating corners in towns and cities that only a local would know. They will also tell you how it has connected them with lots of people from all over the planet.

Geocaching, like camping and getting out into the bush is not for everyone, but also like camping and getting out into the bush, it certainly isn't silly. It's just something that a lot of people do and who also get a lot of fun out of doing it.

A silly game??. Like I said, a sad response.

Hey Blokes

Its a bit like playing the card game, Bridge. You are either excited about it or you are not. I am not.

Craig....Yes. Its for those people who don't know where they are going or what they want to do. Not sure what the Geo Centre has to do with it :-)

Davoe...What? At least with prospecting you have the chance of fnding something of value

Jeff... I hope you don't cry in your weetbix. I understand more than you might know. If you don't like my opinion then that is just too bad.

Cheers

"what the Geo Centre has to do with it" Nothing other than they are just more imaginary often featureless places that many seem the need to have to go to. Could never see the point of standing in the middle of no where looking at my GPS & saying "yep, we're here" Bit like looking for a rubber frog & a piece of string in a jar hidden under a log :-)

Mal and Di

yes I have been doing it for a few years now (GeoKiwi) and have had a great time . As you say it is a great way to find places that you might not discover/know of etc.

If I am going to an area that I havent been to before I will d/l the cache details as waypoint directly into my Garmin. That way if I drive near to one it shows up.

I do alot of trail riding down here and its amazing where we find geocaching stashes around the state. We have a look at whats in them(some strange stuff there) and leave them as we find em.
We must be just eagle eyed as we just seem to find them time and time again.

Its like a treasure hunt that uses the GPS coords for the site of the treasure. My kids found a small toy in one and we have tracked it ever since it came from Texas to us and is now in Scandanavia.

The kids loved doing it, its a great excuse to get out and go for a walk and any excuse is a good on ein my book.

I got great joy out of their joy and its one of my most endearing memories of them.

Hi Mal & Di,
we just started geocaching in the last year. Whenever we go camping or on a trip somewhere, we try and find as many as we can without diverting off too far.
Our 4 kids love it!! To them it's like a giant treasure hunt and we all know..if it keeps the kids happy...the parents are happy!
Just found a few near our house on Saturday and will be going down south soon and will try and find a few there.
All good fun!

Hairy,
for want of a better explanation this is cut and pasted from Wikepedia:

"Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 800,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica."

Anyone with a GPS can find them. Ususally there is a small note pad also where you use your registered geocache "name" to say when you found the cache, what you took out and what you put back in.

To all those heading of to Innaminka all the best and I hope you don't freeze your butts off. Maybe as a bit of a warm up you can hold Willem by the hand and take him to these Coord's nearby and show him what it is all about.

Hi Mal & Di,
Yes we Geocache as well. Mainly when on a camping trip as a way of keeping the kids happy and finding interesting places. It is fun & good excercise. It is also good to hide a few yourself and see who visits your spot.

Always said i wouldnt start this as i didnt have time for another time waster, BUT one sunday morning i couldnt sleep and was in here surfing, and opened up this geocaching site link that was on a post here, and bugga me if there wasnt one about 150 metres from where i live.
So when daylight struck, i went for a walk, and wasted half a day trying to work it out, but couldnt find it, so i was right it is a time waster, so havent tried it since, even though i am still registered and get updates each week.

Cheers Pesty

Pesty the cache in question is a multi cache, you need to read the coords on the back of the sign and then walk 200 metres to where the cache is hidden
