But, there are quite a few places that still only have analog

If you get digital, also get a good quality antenna amplifier.

My understanding and experience is that HD does not provide any stronger signal than standard digital.
If you want TV in the outback then you need to look for a satellite dish & decoder.

(Got this stange feeling you may be a distant inlaw, I'm sure my wife has some yap yap genes!!!!)

I can help you with this question. I own an run a major TV antenna company in Perth WA. Digital reception (HD or SD) will give you a better clearer picture but only if digital is being broadcast from the transmitter in your area and if the signal strength and quality are above a certain value. With a digital signal HD & SD are both transmitted in what they refer to as a transport stream. So if you can decode SD you can decode HD. I personally wouldnt waste my time trying to pick up signal whilst travelling with a TV antenna. The issues you come across are vast. Firstly they transmit on different channels. ie in Perth they transmit on 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 28, 29, & 31. In the bush they might transmit in the middle 50's. This means you need a different type of antenna to pick up the different bands. Also the polarity of the signal changes. It will be either horizontal or vertical. I would by a good quality 85cm dish and a satellite decoder and pick the signal up from the Optus C1 satellite via Optus Aurora.

Best solutions for poor TV reception when away from it all i the outback.........read a book, go for a walk, have a conversation, play cards, etc, etc.
