Does any one know whether or not you can install a later model maf sensor to a 2000 model to solve the problem of the sensors in the earlier series?
thanks beegee

I would ask the question at the Nissan Patrol forum at the site below & you will find lots of information on patrols & making zd30 engine's reliable

Beegee, the short answer is no.

They are a different unit, in fact the later (SrIII) replaceable is just that and the earlier one is not removable from the air tube if I am correct.

You may be able to use the later mod air filter assembly from a wreckers, but those guys know what the price is like new and I don't think you will save much.

The ZD30 one was always removable but they refused to sell it separately for a while. Eventually they relented and sold the MAF. Price went from $1100 to $275.

Hi Beegee,

Patrol ZD30 MAF’s are the same up to the GUIV in late 2004 when they went from a 4 wire to a 5 wire sensor. The main difference is the later ones have a different plug on them and at the time, I was told that the change was so that Nissan could use the same MAF on several of it’s engines in the 3 to 4 litre range. The later MAF is no better or different in operation, but it is more expensive at this stage, although I would expect that to change. They both incorporate an intake air temp sensor as well as the heat membrane which function similarly to the earlier hot wire type.

There is no advantage in going to the later type because the issue isn’t that it’s a bad or faulty MAF, but the excessive crankcase oil that contaminates them. If you have oil in your intake or intercooler, you will go through MAF sensors, but it’s best to stop the oil getting to them by fitting a catch can, rather than replacing MAF sensors. Leaking and excessive EGR is also a contributing factor.

thanks chaz . I will now get to the story, I purchased a 2006 motor from a wreckers and was lucky enough to score the maf sensor with it ,but my 2000 wiring loom only has the five wire ,I have the 2006 six wire plug that was cut off the wrecks loom so what I actually need to know is if I was to follow the colours could I wire my loom to it .the difference is a different configuration of the same colours and two black wires instead of one so maybe join two black together? reason for all this is I am having a lot of trouble with engine light and differing code reads so I thought maybe I could try this without having to fork out big dollars for a new one thanks beegee

Ah, sorry Beegee, I thought it was a case of 4 and 5 wire, but you’re correct.
I haven’t had the opportunity to look closely at the later MAF, but I suspect you may be able to get it going provided the ECU can’t tell the difference.
I can only suggest to take a close look at the two different wiring diagrams for them both and perhaps it will just be a case of rewiring to suit. If the two black wires are ground wires, you may be in business, but otherwise you may have to retain the earlier sensor to go with the ECU. There are quite a bit of electronics in them, so they may not be interchangeable, but it would be worth a try if you can get the wiring sorted.
If you need to buy a new one, email Nizzbits for a good price. I think I paid $215 for my last one, delivered to my door. nizzbits@hotmail.com

Good luck.
