Friends will be driving south along the coast from
Townsville in the next few days and have asked me the best place to see the reef for a few hours - not a days cruise to a dive site because there isnt time. Can anyone suggest a good place?

The reef does not come close to the coast until you get north of
Cairns, a long boat trip or a shorter flight will be the only way to see some coral. Try the reef aquarium in
Townsville, it is a pretty good option instead.

U may be able to do a half day tour to one of the islands off
Airlie Beach but it is a fringed reef and not all that exciting as so many people have stood on the coral. otherwise they are out of luck
