After being quoted $4,600 for a Herron 2,2 air con, installed in our 2nd hand van, we are looking for an affordable cooling system that can handle the deep north. (240V)
Anyone found the holy grail?
Cheers

Seakarvan,
Get a window rattler. They are the old style AC that are used in houses. Can pick up them for bugger all. If you dont want to cut a large hole in the side(or back or front for that matter) buy a split system. Either insulate the copper tube
well to protect it from vibration through the side of the van or get some hoses made up with the same size flare nuts for your split out of automotive flexible ac line. Its rubber and will handle vibration no worries. Both of these should be
well under $1000 fitted if you are a bit handy. If you can get second hand stuff and dont mind using it you could do it for a lot less. I am a fridgy buy trade and for instance I put Fujitsu splits in my house, less than 1 year old, cost me $400 for all of them. 2 X 2.5hp and 1 x 1hp. Lots of people just chem em when they are replacing them. Food for thought anyway. Where are you located?

Thanks for that Matt, I have seen the Rattlers before and it seems a second hand split system will have to be looked into. I'd fit it myself.
We are over the other side of Oz,

Trailcraft and other Caravan manufacturers now use 1.0 to 2hp
Fujitsu or other small split systems. Heron is cr@p ..
just use a normal small household split system and you will be fine
good luck

Thanks to all,
A small Fuijitsu is the plan.
PS The quotes for a Heron 2.2 installed package, same air - same van was $4.6K - $4.2K - $3.8K - $3K . Such is life

Don't even go near that Heron crap!
If you care to research some of the dedicated Caravan Forums you wil find a big swing to domestic inverter spilt systems.
A hell of a lot cheaper to buy, actually cheaper to install and much moe efficient.
A reverse cycle heating and cooling system that will run off a Yamaha or Honda 1Kv generator.
Many of these owners habitually run their conditioners from a Honda EU10 Generator.

Thanks Ian, I couldn't understand why van air could cost the earth compared to our home units.
