We bought our first van about three years ago which was a single axle unit and at the same time all the tow bar, WDH & brake controller etc ( all Hayman Reece )
OK........ OK........OK I know that there is much better brake controller units out there (Prodigy?) But I didn't know better at the time!! So, that is what we have got.
I was in a Jayco Spare parts etc.
shop to day & noticed that there were brake controllers units available dependant upon the number of axles on the trailer.
We recently updated our van to a bogey axle, so now I am wondering whether or not the existing brake controller activates all four
wheels on the van. Any comments would be appreciated. Cheers.

Does your caravan have brakes on all four
wheels? Look inside the
wheels to see if there are brakes fitted. I think it is usual to fit brakes to the front axle only, my boat trailer is set up this way.

Trailers/vans over 2T must have brakes on all wheel/axles as
well as break away brakes. If it is 750kg to 2T, brakes on
wheels on one axle only is law but you may find they are on all
wheels anyway.

It'sa long time since there were any vans with electric brakes fitted to only one axle of a dual axle van. I think you will have to go back to the 80s. It is generally considered that if it needs 4
wheels to carry it then it needs 4
wheels to stop it.

Don't disagree, I am just pointing out the law on the subject

Yes - thankfully this is one place van manufacturers do not opt for the minimum requirement to satisfy the law.

If you are looking at controllers that are labeled as suitable for a given number of axles you can take it to mean that is the maximum number and not the minimum. The Prodigy will handle up to 3 axles so if you like it, purchase it. I use one for a single axle van.
