Hi
My Troopy is now out of warranty and i'm now servicing myself.
It says that the bearings should be repacked every 20k.
A few questions.
Do they need to be done every 20k? The vehicle is loaded to the hilt , tows a camper most of the time and does it's share of offroad work.
Do both the front and back need to be done as often as each other?
The picture attached is with the free wheeling hub removed, this looks like LMM grease to me, the type used for the steering knuckles? The bearing grease i have always used to service my trailers looks very different to this stuff.
Toyota have always done the servicing.
Anything else i should know before i pull it all apart as i have only done trailer bearings not 4 x 4 ?
Thanks for your help.
Lyndon
AHH!!! errors, can't post a picture, it's the thick grey looking grease
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still

Gday Lyndon,

"Do they need to be done every 20k?"
I'd suggest 40k is often enough if you're not doing water crossings. You'll also see Valve clearances listed at 20k, and again, 40k is often enough.

"Do both the front and back need to be done as often as each other?"
Yep. The only wheel bearing failures I've seen have been rears because people didn't know that fully floating rear hubs needed their bearings serviced.

I've always used wheel bearing grease for wheel bearings.

"Anything else i should know before i pull it all apart"

Perhaps I could add that you need to be careful with the way you put the free wheeling hubs back on. Its easy to line up incorrectly and then the hubs won't lock in. You won't realise it until you slide uncontrollably down a hill because you weren't actually in 4wd!!! Seen that happen twice up at Argadells - both after dealer servicing.
