G'day first time on so not sure if this has been mentioned before.
I'm heading up to
Darwin towing a 16.5 ft Avondale Explorer Deluxe (1978 i think)poptop caravan not sure of the weight. Using a Ford Futura wagon(2004)model and is my first time towing this type of distance.I have recently towed to merrimbula(nsw)and averaged 400kms per
tank along the princess highway.
we are senting off around 22 of sept 08 and have to be there by the 27th of sept for the national superules championships, although coming home will be via Coloundra(QLD)and we have a month to get accross to there . Anyadvise as to which would be the most straight forward way for us to travel.
cheers kerna

I'd give yourself another day or two to get there if possible.
A few years ago I drove
Melbourne to
Darwin in three very long days plus a one day sidetrip to Ayres Rock. That was in a vehicle which was not towing anything. Because of time constraints I also drove during the hours of darkness which I advise you not to do. So, in reality. we're talking about four days of 8+ hours driving. If you haven't seen
the Rock it would be a shame to miss it for a 500km detour. Coober Peedy and
Woomera are also worth a look.

thanks Mike and al V .We really do need to be there by the 27th but will be back tracking to Ayres Rock ,olgas etc on the way back as we have 3 weeks before we need to be in Coloundra (qld). we are planing on heading up via
Mildura then onto Waikerie to
Morgan to
Burra to
Peterborough to
Port Augusta then Stuart hwy to
Darwin. We will have another chance to see
Coober Pedy mid next year so it's no drama if we miss it this time around. thanks for your input

Try using
http://www.mynrma.com.au/travel_planner.asp
This returns a page you can print out and hand to the navigator. It suggests a distance of 3722 km and a travel time of 45 H 32 M (average speed of 82 km/H.) From my experience thei is the route I would use.
