Hi has anyone experience a voltage drop in their main fuel gauge
I thought it might have been the fuel sender but it only happens mostly on the h/way.
What happen is I'll be driving along on h/way with a full tank of fuel when the fuel gauge will drop down to around halfway and when I slow down to around 60kph or stop it comes back up to a correct reading I was talking to someone and they said that it sounded more like a voltage drop than a crook sender so then I put A/C on and lights on high beam and noticed the gauge drop without car moving it only seems to effect the main fuel gauge as lights ect do not flicker if anyone knows a solution would be much appreciated
Cheers Lyle

I seem to recall that there was some sort of Earthing problem on the firewall of these.
I think they put an extra earth connection onto the firewall somewhere. I think Nissan were aware of the issue.

Lyle,
This is a common issue with the GU because there is no earth cable from the battery negative to the chassis, only to the body and engine. The only electrical system on the car that’s fitted to the chassis is the sub tank, pump and controls so if you fit any additional electrical equipment and earth it to the chassis such as spot lights or trailer wiring, it finds an earth return through your fuel tank, gauge and transfer wiring.
The normal solution is to fit a good sized battery cable from the chassis to the body under the car near the subtank.

Instead of crawling underneath and putting body earth at sub tank earthing point just put one from the battery negitive to a good body point .eg battery cradle mounting bolt. This will be much easier and just as good

As I stated in the post above “there is no earth cable from the battery negative to the chassis, only to the body and engine”, so fitting ANOTHER cable from the battery negative to the body (or battery tray) won’t help in any way, you need to put one to the chassis. Remember the body is rubber mounted to the chassis and their lies the problem.

Thanks Guys,
Chaz is right I fitted one from the neg on my auxiliary battery to the battery tray didn't fix so I fitted a 2nd one as Chaz's diagram and it look like it has done the job so I have left the one from the battery to the holder in place anyway.
I will cancel the mechanic now.
Cheers Guys Thanks again

Well done Lyle,
Hopefully it solves the problem. As I said it’s common with the GU’s and I’ve heard that the dealers do many of them. I wonder if they use a different chassis/body mounting system to the earlier models.
I’ve never had a problem with
mine, but I fitted the cable shortly after buying the car and you can never have too many earth cables fitted because the connections can go bad. It’s a good idea to spray a bit of paint over the connections to stop any rust or high resistance connections occurring in time.
There have been many weird symptoms arising from this issue and it’s a bit like when your tail lights flash slowly when you use the indicators on your trailer, just a poor earth connection.
