Gday,
Grog- Finke is dry, like 99% of comunities so grog is banned!
Camping- Why do you want to
camp in Finke? There is nothing there to see unless you want to stay for a bit of a culture shock....
If your heading towards Lamberts?
Kulgera would be a better place to stay or get off the road a bit and hide in the scrub.
But do remember HIDE as you will get plenty of Drunken Natives calling in to offer their
services if they see you
camping.
Cheers

Gday,
Camping at
Kulgera is nothing flash, but not too bad. They have cabins if you dont want to
camp and the pub isnt too bad either.
If
Kulgera is too far you would be better off
camping North of Finke rather than West as there will be less traffic, but again....hide. Better off know one knowing your there.
Cheers

Finke dry!!! Might be around the bloody pump, but it get's a bit wet further out on some nights.
For once I agree with the Scrubby Town Mayor.
Stay north of Finke and go off bush for a mile or so. There's plenty of scrub to get lost in. Stay away from side tracks.
Regards
Kim

Wouldn't recommend
Kulgera. Very noisy. Hiding off road in the scrub the better option, unless you need the facilities.

Was at Finke and
Lambert centre about 2 weeks ago.
Lambert centre would be OK for a
camp.
Roadside before or after Finke would be OK.
THE ROAD FROM FINKE TO CHAMBERS TURNOFF WAS THE WORST ROAD IN AUSTRALIA.
The road was chewed up due to
the desert race.

Hello Doug,
I travelled the rough South Road last year and two vehicles in our party suffered damage from the corrrrrrrrrrrugations and our tyres also sustained considerable wear. Stay at
Chambers Pillar, it's a majic place to
camp !
I also recommend returning to the Stuart Highway via the Hugh River Road. You could
camp at the
river crossing or stay the night at Stuarts
Well. A recent TV report showed that there's
free camping at the
Stuarts Well Roadhouse ........ and a singing
dingo ! If that's not an option, you could
camp the night at Henbury Meteorite Craters or maybe the
Erldunda Roadhouse.
Happy travels,
Netnut

Thanks to all for your thoughts - yeah, will probably return to the Stuart as we will have hooch on board, you know to add to the diesel because of global warming. And who cares about the dead centre of Oz - poor old Lambert!
Thanks again Doug W

On your way out of
Chambers Pillar, after the big
jump up,the road bends to your left (east). If you continue North instead of turning (through private property!) and follow the fence line north and then a 90 degree turn West it will take you to the railwayline. The railway line has a good service road which runs next to it (again ...your not supposed to be on it) which will take you North, across the Hugh river stock route and to another track which leads in to
Rainbow Valley.
Have a look on Google Earth....the track is marked.
Im not sure if the
Rainbow valley track is but if you want to go that way let be know and Ill give you better directions.
Jims place does have
free camping, paid power sites and cabins. The meals are great and Dinky the singing
dingo wont be there much longer as Jim is selling up and becomeing a
grey nomad.
The road (railway) goes both North and South but I havent been South along it. Last time I went to
Rainbow Valley that way from Chambers the track was fantastic (about 6 months ago).......I reckon we sat on about 90-100km easily. I doubt the condition would have changed much.
Cheers
