Hi all, we are new to this fantastic site. Hoping we get some feedback on whether we should drive our 85 model Hilux runner with 2.4 turbo diesel to drive up to
Cape York from
Brisbane and to central Oz towing a camper trailer for a couple of months. It has a dual tanks. Anyone of you experienced any problems driving it at 23 years old ? We are not sure if we should spend more $$ for a younger vehicle than this? Thanks :)

I'm sure it's been done before, but do you really want to take the chance ? Metal fatigues, and other bits can show up as faulty on such a trip. Which is fine if you have a support crew with welding and spare bits. Mechanical work on that track can be vewwy expensive.
Two customers of
mine took an old Ford as far as
Cooktown before it ended up all over the track (literally). Dangerous and disappointing.
Having said all that I did see an old Holden bashing up and down the corros on my last trip. I have no idea if he got back Ok, but there are always vehicles and trailers by the side of the road with problems.
Just how determined are you, and do you have sufficient resources in case of problems ?

The problem with us giving you advice is we are not aware of your maitance schedule. I would suggest taking to a specialist 4wd repairer and getting them to give it a complete inspection. Will be the best $200.00 you will ever spend.
To give you a basic idea you will need to repace all hoses and belts. Have the radiator professionally cleaned. Fit new shocks and possibly springs.
Bare in mind because of
the glut of used 4wds on the market, you could pick up a ten year old vehicle with 100000ks for $12000.00
Good luck Pete

I would suggest that if your vehicle is in good condition, and you have good suspention and tyres and some recovery gear.
Go for it and have a ball.
New belts, hoses, rad, serviced wheel bearings etc. front/ rear diff, gbox, and tcase oil change etc etc etc.
Get new brushes in your alt if its not been done for a while.
If your vehicle is good now, then take it easy and enjoy it.
