I"m in the process of replacing the head gasket on my 1HD-T . Does anyone know of any problems or particular issues i should be aware of before i start the re-assembly. Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

Have it pressure tested and skimmed.
Use new head bolts, fit a new thermostat and clean the radiator, re-oil the viscous fan.
Work out why it failed in the first place.

Derek.

The motor was a reco when i bought the car and has only about 75,000ks on it. The gasket apears to have let go between no. 2 and 3. It didn"t get hot just started pushing its coolant out. Three of the head bolts look a little sus. One is very rusted and the other two are gummend up and covered in grunge , all the others where perfectly clean and free in their threads. So you definatly recomend all new head bolts ? I'm doing the radiator thermostat and
water pump but how do you re-oil a viscous fan?
Thanks for your help
PS the gasket that came off has 5 notches in it which i think is the thickest gasket, should i just refit the same of remeasure the piston protrusion.

Have the head pressure tested and measured. They will supply the correct gasket and head bolts too.

Sorry forgot...
Toyota sell viscous oil (+-$16.00) a tube. Its easy to fill if you have a impact driver to loosed the screws.
Note: Toyota have deals on thermostats and
water pumps and if you are lucky you will get a new viscous hub with the
water pump.

Derek.

Make sure to use an impact driver.

Have the injectors checked. When you get bad fuel and the injector spray pattern is all over the place, they can squirt between the head and the block instead of into the combustion chamber and blow the head gasket.
