Hello Queenslanders (and the rest of you).

QORF (Queensland Outdoor Recreation Ferderation) acting on behalf of the Dept of Sport and Rec are currently holding community discussion about the Adventure Activity Standards that will soon be started in QLD.

The AAS applies (if we are to assume that what has happened elsewhere will happen in QLD) only when there is a dependant relationship ie; a leader and clients, or group being lead. (such as a 4wd trip). It does not apply exclusively to commercial operations.

The AAS have been implimented in most other states, and this is your chance to have a say in their formation in QLD.

The workshop schedule can be downloaded from here

AAS Workshop schedule

Below is quoted from the email from QORF

Dear Dave,

QORF is about to commence Adventure Activity Standards consultation and as part of this stage of the Project, we would be appreciative if you would assist in circulating workshop schedules to parties you perceive to be relevant.

A vital part of the project involves QORF consulting with industry in order to gain feedback and comment for the development of the AAS. Such input is highly valued as it enables the AAS to be relevant and representative of industry needs and ultimately will enhance the quality of the AAS. QORF is conducting a number of state-wide workshops to facilitate face-to-face discussion and receive feedback on the AAS development process. These free workshops are open to the general public. (Details are provided in the attachment to this email.) Alternatively, feedback can be delivered via the internet (qaas@qorf.org.au).

It would be greatly appreciated if you could please forward this information to your respective affiliates via your own organisational database(s).

Thank you in advance for your assistance. Should you have any queries regarding the project, please feel free to contact QORF.

I hope this doesn't mean that if I go with a group of friends on a camping trip we'll need to be accredited. Sorry if I misunderstood reading between your lines.

My bride calls me a cynic but I can't help puting this 2 and 2 together to arrive at something other than 4. Deaths at 4wd parks plus pressure on some polly = Govt intervention.

Don't misunderstand me here I am all for safety but have a heap of dislike for Govt intervention as they almost always get it wrong but are pleased that they have done something.

Kind regards

To keep the cynic flavour going!

Do you notice that all acrreditation schemes mean setting up a commercial business of accreditors.

If safety was the main concern, the credential should be able to obtained free of cost.

We have silly bits of paper regulating our society we do not need more. Some silly suggestion will arise like no can go driving unless accompanied by an acredited leader. Where does this nonsense end.

Where is the balance between safety and obigation for individuals to be responsible for themselves and their actions.

Once acreditted such people will be targets of litigation so then they will need more expensive insurance etc etc etc

Here is a quote from the South Australia web site.

"If it can be proved, on the balance of probabilities, that a participant was fully aware of and freely accepted the risk of suffering injury in an activity then this will be a defence to
a claim in negligence. It will not be a defence, however, if the injury was caused by the inexperience or incompetence of the provider, defective equipment, inadequate supervision or instruction as it is highly unlikely that any participant would have
consented to accept such risks."

Also, the preamble refers to "Industry" and does not seem to refer to private groups.

I certainly do not mean to offend anyone by posting this information. I am not making any suggestions to this forum on AAS but rather making you all aware of their existence.

I guess that if you feel strongly enough, one way or the other, you'll get yourself along to one of the workshops and voice your opinion to the people who need to hear it.

cheers

I am attending the 2nd of the WA mtgs specific to 4WDs tonight. The 1st was last week and tonight should have the document avail. for public comment by sep2008. So far not much input recv'd from commercial operators and it is they who will be affected the most. As for non-commercial.....there will be ramifications if you are either the leader /organiser or participant in a 'group' and something goes wrong and it ends up either in the courts or before the coroner. At the start of all this back early in 2007 I was told the AAS was more or less a safety net for a leader/organiser in the event of something going wrong. As I place a certain value on my lifestyle I would prefer not to have it disrupted by some litigation guru or a coroners report or finding. A few hours spent finding out and helping out seems a small price to pay. Then again I could be like a lot of others and not give a ........ rgds
Slow down and relax......

I have been extremely lucky so far that nothing has gone pearshape on a trip.

I have however indicated to participants in my little adventures that they are 'On their own' should something go wrong beyond my control.

Future forays into the Never Never will be more pertinent and to the point as far as these things go. Unfortunately we live in a world of litigation and "It's not my fault' syndrome.

I shudder to think what could have gone wrong with some of the people who have come along on my trips.

Cheers
