Hi all, have Landcruiser Ute and recently the bolt/thread that acted as the spare tyre holder has snapped off. It was welded to the headboard on the tray behind the passenger. It was just a long thread and the rim was just placed on here like a wheel stud. I gather you all know what i am talking about. The problem is i dont really wanna re weld another thread there if its just going to break away again. I was just after some ideas from people how they have mounted there spare to utes. I really want it to stay against the headboard and will have another going beside it.
Any simple solutions out there, although just welding another thread is probably the simplest i just thought i would ask. There are some excellent ideas on this
forum.

Some of the guy's at work actually have had brackets welded from the top of the headboard, and mount the tyre over the top of the roof..
This requires an additional pieces of angle iron, coming up from lower down, for support, all done off the headboard..
They have never had an issue with breaking off..
Cheers

Bucky,
While I agree that is a solution for some, there are quite a few on here (the old and infirm, like me) who couldn't lift the spare up to that height as
well as lifting it onto the tray.
If breaking bolts is a problem, I suspect it is because the tyre can move around a bit, mainly from side to side.
I had the same problem and cured it by making a support frame out of mild steel curved to fit the diameter of the tyre and welding that to the headboard at tray level, sat the tyre in that and still used the bolt and nut through the stud hole.
It stops the tyre moving about and limits the stress on the holding bolt, has worked for me........so far.
Disco.

K,
Our tojo utes come with brackets for 2 tyres, up against the head board.
Originally the brackets were made from 19 or 25 mm square bar, bent in an elongated "U" shape around the tyre, with 2 pieces, about 100mm long @ right-angles to this frame at each end, that slotted into 2 pieces of square tube welded to the head board.
worked okay, until you changed the tyre section, or size.
They are now made out of 25mm pipe, with only the ends being sq. bar. These seem much better, as they are much lighter.
You could always use a length of chain, stretched around the tyre too. Have used Ocky straps in a temporary case, but the straps can't take long term weight.
Hooroo,
Bob.
