Before the cracked chassis incident occured that put paid to us doing the Simpson crossing, I was having some "issues" with my Nuvi 660.

I'd be driving along with perfect vision of the sky (and clean windscreen etc) and the little lady inside the Nuvi would kindly tell me that I had poor satelite reception and the damn map would disappear. The other bloke travelling with us was still getting excellent reception.

So, I'd turn the Nuvi off and leave it for a while (10 minutes, half an hour etc) and when I switched it back on, it would usually come up okay for a little while (sometimes 5 minutes....sometimes half an hour) before she'd let me know that she'd again lost contact with those elusive bloody satelites!!!

I thought it might be dust on the flip-up antenna etc, so cleaned that off....I even took the unit out of the Patrol and checked it as a hand held.....no good.

Yesterday I used it to navigate my way to the chassis place; no worries. Coming back home, it let me down again (luckily I knew how to get back home...hahahaha).

Anyone got any ideas? Maybe I need to fit an external antenna?

Thanks for any advice you can give...... I'm not in any major hurry as the 'trol will be off the road for a while yet. ;-((

If you tried to use it out of the vehicle with no joy, then I don't think an external antenna would improve the situation..
I'd say it's stuffed..
Nissan/Garmin/Waeco..same ole story !!

And don't forget the Futch and Hyclones LOL

Roachie,

I had similar issues with Sam's Tom Tom. I worked out it didn't like corrugations very much and the 12v power supply was vibrating loose and would freeze the screen.

Bill

I don't think thqat some of these new fandangled electronic gadjets can handle the corrugations. Once they go pear shaped...that's it. My PDA DC charger gave notice at Innamincka. I rang the supplier(the one from the Riverland) via Satphone and caught him at Esperance. He didn't sound too happy.....LOL

A bit O/T here...
You have a Samsung mobile?? Is it on Next G??
If so- what do your 'symbols' say just to the right of the 'reception' indicator??
Down the bottom- does it constantly show 'Roaming" ??
Cheers

Signman

Yes its Next G

Next to the T with a number of bars in the top left hand corner there is 3G

At the bottom there is Telstra or Searching or No Service

Is that what you are referring to?

Yea- something like that...

I got a 'supposedly' Telstra Samsung SGH-A412 with NextG, (all done legit. thru Telstra reseller)- but it just doesn't seem right..
Down the bottom of the screen- it shows permanent 'Roaming' ...
Next to the reception bars- it shows E (in a box) then next across R (in a box)...

Only got it Thurs last week !!

Thanks for your info

Just a thought Signman..............

It could be that you live in an area where there are multiple towers and the phone roams to the closest one. Here in the stcks there is only a tower in a town and an occasional one somewhere else.

Mate, I feel for you. I can't help with your problem but you must have run over a dozen chinamen in a previous life or something! I gathered there was a problem with the vehicle from the various posts trying to take the pi$$. Gee, I hope it isn't as serious as it sounds?

There has to be a good news post about/from you soon?

Kind regards

Theo

Thanks Theo, It's all gunna be okay.....just a cracked chassis (to match it's owner!!! hahaha). I don't mind everybody taking the p!ss outa me cos while they're giving me a hard time they're leaving some other poor mongrel alone...hahaha

I'm the first to admit I do more than my fair share of stupid things that lead to my various problems.

The Nuvi is a bit different..... I haven't tried to modify it (except I have an SD card in the slot provided)..... so I'm a bit ticked-off that it's playing up; especially one of those lovely things known as an "intermittent problem". I bet if I was to send it off to Garmin for a look see, they'd let me know that they tested it for umpteen hours and couldn't find any fault. Either that, or they'd let me know that it's dead and they can sell me a nice shiny new 760 to replace it.....!!!!!! hahaha

Mate, don't feel sorry for me, Annette & I had a chuckle about this whole cracked chassis saga when we realised we were home safely and in one piece....it's not the end of the earth.

Roachie

It could have been much worse for you if the chassis cracked in the middle of the Simpson crossing. Would have been difficult to move it out of there in that condition.

The Nuvi you can do without, inconvenient for sure but you know how to navigate from a map I am sure.

Is the insurance taking care of the chassis? If not it might be a good time to extend it a bit.

Cheers
Dick

Mate,
Re-set it. I don't know how to do it to a 660 though with a 760 you hold the the power slide off for more than 10 seconds. Check your manual.

Hope it helps.

Not really related to your problem directly but from the reviews I've read on these it seems that the Yank models have much more powerful Sirf III receivers whilst the Aussie models don't state that at all.

In your case I would certainly be sending it back to Garmin, sometimes one just has bad luck and gets a lemon.

It wasn't last Monday (7th) was it?. I'm wondering if there is something up with the satellites.
I was tooling around the Barossa last Monday, and had a similar thing happen to me. I had my Nuvi 760 on, and also my Map 60CS, which was connected to an external antenna on top of the snorkel.
Turned off the Sturt Highway at Nuriootpa, and the 60CS dropped out.
At first I thought I hadn't pushed the little MCX plug for the antenna in properly....I've been caught out by this before, so I wasn't too bothered.
But then the Nuvi lost reception too for a few minutes....and kept dropping in and out all the way back to Adelaide.
The 60CS never picked up the satellites again.

The next day all was back to normal, and hasn't dropped out again.
I think it may be a poltergeist :-)

Cheers

Interesting.

Last Monday morning at Arkaroola my Satphone showed full signal strength but displayed "Searching. Check Signal" for about an hour then it was OK.

Anyone watched the beginning of the movie Independance Day recently???

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Touchwood, I haven't had any probs in the 12months I've had my 660. As someone suggested, try resetting it (reset button is under the antenna). Beware, all you favourite places etc will be deleted.

Have you logged onto MyGarmin.com? I recently logged on and upgraded the software. That may help your problem.

Try calling the guys at The Electric Bug, a couple of the guys seem to know their stuff.

I've also had the occasional 'can't find the satelliites' with my Nuvi 660.

I seem to fix mine by working the hinge on the flip up antenna (just flip it up & down a few times), appears the connection from the antenna to the unit is via the hinges on the 660 & I suspect it is just a poor contact once in a while causing my problem.

But as already suggested, hitting the reset button under the antenna is worth a try (may lose your data/settings) & ensuring you have the lastest firmware installed by using webupdater... before sending it back to Garmin who now have an office here in Aust.

cheers
Jeff
