Land Rover Disco specific question

I've recently removed the gearbox and transfer case from my series one 2.5 TD five speed manual Disco. My question is about the high / low diff lock selector "stick". The selector stick has a slight bend / crank in it and I'm wondering which way round the crank is supposed to face. To the back of the vehicle or to the front nearer the front console.
The gear selector works either way, doesn't hit anything etc. I've looked at three or four other Discos same age same configuration, there doesn't seem to be any consistency as to what is right. I've used a magnifying glass on the owners manual with no success I can't pick out which way round, does anyone know?
