Hi - I'm travelling this route in about 7 days time. With rain forecast for the Eyre Peninsular (not sure how far north) on this comimng Sunday, I wondered how the Track may be affected by rain/heavy rain. If it's sand, would it become boggy and impassable after rain?

I am calling into the Parks office in Ceduna for a permit before we start the trck so I suppose they will have the up to the minute information anyway.

Happy days

George

George

The first part of the track is normal red dirt intermingled with some sand. After about 40km(as I recall) it becomes sand all the way. The track has been compacted over the years but it remains to be seen if ponded water becomes an issue.

I would ring the Parks Office at Ceduna the day before leaving to make sure that the track is open and also have some contingency plans to go elsewhere.

Cheers

Hi George. We went that way a couple of years ago from Ceduna up (North) and it rained a fair bit. We were towing an offroad trailer and slid around a bit at first but I think it actually helped us in getting over the sandhills as it compacted the sand.
We did the normal things like letting our tyres down to 18 psi
and found the going ok. Along the flat bits there was a bit of water puddling but we got thru it ok. I think it adds to the fun.
One word of caution thou. Beware of others coming from the opposite direction when going up the sandhills.
cheers and have fun
Steve

George as advised check at the Ceduna toursit information centre as they are always knowledgable and helpful. Make sure you have a sand flag and as previously stated be on the look out for people travelling in a northerly direction.

The track is a recommend one-way, South to North and sadly people are ignoring this and there have been some near misses recently that could have been disasters.

The lack of rain out there has seen a lot of drift build up and some of the dunes can be quite tricky to negotiate so once you get into the sandy country tyres down to around 18 psi to start with and go to 16 psi if required and take it easy. There is plenty to see out there and we normally take a couple of days to do it.

A satphone is nice to have if you are travelling alone as it is a remote area. There is also a nominated UHF channel to use on this track which I cannot remember at the moment but the locals will advise you on it

If you are out there also consider stopping and investigating the Gawler Ranges NP as there is some nice country out there as well

Regards

George,

The UHF Ch is 18. We are doing the trip, leaving Adelaide on the 15th August, so would appreciate any feedback when you return.

The preferred travel direction is south to north, but you can do it North to South. We did it South to North last year and the approaches where very rutted out. Only spent one night in the park due to health issue.

This time travelling North to South, 2 nights at Mt Finke and 2 nights at Goog's Lake.

Enjoy the trip.
