G'day all, I have the oppertunity to buy a secondhand Barret 980 HF radio, It has been used only as a marine radio at sea & I was wondering if it can be used in my 4by with land based frequencies tuned into it? are they programmable? Also what would it be worth second hand? What are the most common frequencies used in the bush? thanks, regards, Dingo

Where in Oz are you mate?

I found this one on Trading Post just now, this looks like a good deal

Was thinking of it for myself, but I don't have the $$ for it at present.

Not sure if Marine and Land Based radios are the same, there will be someone on here who does, Footloose knows a fair bit about these things, but for travelling it would be wise to join VKS 737

Click here for their web site

Also the HF Radio club isn't too bad either.

Brian
That one looks a good deal !!
Although it has been fitted in a Toyota- might not be compatible with a Nissan !!

Im sure it can be reprogrammed and get VKS 737 and RFDS freq put on it. You can also get ABC, BBC, Radio america etc but only if that floats your boat.
I dont know what sort of aerial is used in marine applications, so you may need to consider this in the price.

These freq are Rx only unless you have approval to have them installed to Tx. Will have to get the others off the radio but wont be home for a while, try a google search. http://www.scanaustralia.bigpondhosting.com/

The radio is a marine unit, and may not have selcall appropriate to the Land Mobile service.
Most common frequencies can be Googled from various Networks e.g. 737 and Bush Telegraph and RFDS pages.
Has the owner bought this radio and then found it unsuitable I wonder ?

Does it come with a Barrett 910 autotune antenna? Autotunes are worth about $1500.

From the website the marine radios may come with a 911 automatic antenna tuner. I don't know whether it will be a good option in a 4wd?
