Our new second-hand caravan gained quite a few improvements thanks to the fella's and gals on this site. Thanks to the many that took the time to help out an old newbie to vans.
The only contentious issue was the increase in ride height by putting the axle on the bottom of
the springs. I noted previously that there is new vans being sold with this set-up, but due to safety/legal issues raised I checked where the RTA and my insurance company stood.
1. The RTA was excellent in providing advice and provided a copy of the National standards for trailers (including Vans) under 4.5 tonnes. No problem there. They did point out that different states have varying by-laws.
2. The insurance company wanted a letter from an independent and qualified person who appraised as to whether the
suspension modification performed, was competently done and safe. All good there with a new policy clearly recognising the modification.
The interesting thing I found was most insurance 'knock-backs' arose from the owners failure to comply with point 2. Comes generally under "Notice of Disclosure"
Back to stealing diesel and fire wood, see ya.
Cheers

A really good lesson for a lot of
young (and not so
young) blokes. If you want to modify vehicles then check with the authorities. that way you shouldn't encounter problems with the Law or Insurance Comapanies. Besides all that, your vhicle will probably end up still being safe androadworthy.
