Is this track accessible to the public and has anyone driven it?

Busy planning my adventure for 2009

Hi Willem
Yes it is open to the public, I have driven it a couple of times over the last couple of years, you don't have to go to Hillside as there is a turn off before Hillside which takes you out to the Highway. Great drive early in the morning, lots of colour in the ranges.

Joe.

Hi Joe

Thanks for that.

It means that I don't have to double back through Newman or via South Hedland on my way to Carnarvon

Giday Willem

as the previous post. They are public roads and an easy run most times......

The country west of Hillside is pretty ordinary..every time I drive that section around Abydos / Woodstock my wife reminds me I took her as my new bride to look at an offer I received to mange the place and she in no uncertain terms made it plain that it wasnt going to happen.....it didnt

Another nice drive in same area is from Bonnie Downs across to Hillside...the black coloured ranges around Hillside are magnificant in the right light

Glen Herring gorge is much much better than the average tourist sees...if get out and have a good long walk in and around and you will see flood debris at heightd that defies the imagination (across the spinifex in one year) ...I think a lot of people stop at the little car park have a quick look at the easy bits and leave never knowing what they missed

dont miss Kittys gap and Coppins Gap NE of marble bar although with recent mining activity there (moly mines) it may be a little over populated perhaps

cheers

Thanks for that Bungarra. IOt is good to get some local knowledge of the area.

I have been looking at possible costs from SA for my projected trip and it is frightening. I shall have to visit the Goldfields in Victoria in earnest to try and find some colour .....lol

You will cross the FMG and BHP ore railway lines about 10-15km before the GN Highway - watch out for ore trains!!

Hi Willem,
we towed our Trailcraft caravan along that road in late may. There is a bit of road realignment going on where they are duplicating the railway but no problems at all. a good drive, other than the fact that we were pushing it for time and didn't get the opportunity to stop and have a good look. Next time.
Happy travelling,
Mike and Jan.
