OK guys after some help with my newly acquired 1994 Feroza.
The fuel guage is not behaving itself.
When the tank is full and car is idle guage reads just under half, when I am driving the guage goes down to empty, then when the tank is approx half full it moves up to half and slowly comes down to empty. When it is on empty there is about 20 litres still left in the tank.

Any ideas on why this may be happening?

Not looked at this vehicle in particular, but generally fuel gauges consist of a sender unit, and the gauge itself.

The gauge itself is basically a volt meter, which displays the varying output from the sender unit.

Sender unit is usually a float which is operating a variable resistor or rehostat, which sends the varying signal to the gauge.

If you remove the sender unit from top of tank, usually accessable thru boot area, check with a dvm if the output is varying as you move the float.

Normally they just need a good clean up and removal of residues, if not it may need a new sender, or poss float has a hole in it.

Unlikely to be dash unit as they usually work or dont work.

Strip sender unit out, clean, n see how you go, if no good, try wreckers for a 2nd hand sender.

Hope this helps

Thanks Ron

I was going to look at getting the sender unit out tomorrow and see if there is anything outstandingly wrong with it.

Well hope your trip went well... Atleast that way you didn't run out of petrol with the gauge telling you that you still had 1/4 tank!

Pulling your new car apart already hey? :)

Can't help you with your problem but I do have a replacement unit for a 94 Feroza for the steering column switches stalks (the bit that goes on the steering column that has indicator and wiper stalks etc.
If you think it would be of any use to you, it's yours for $50- and I'll pay the postage....

I bought it from a wreckers when I had a Feroza, but never got around to fitting it.

Well I dropped the fuel tank out yesterday (after much swearing and cursing), removed the sender and opened the case.
What I found was that the little swing arm that moves along the coil was not actually touching and the coil had crap all over it. After cleaning the coil and bending the swing arm (carefully) back so that it touched all the way along the coil I tested it and worked a treat.

Cheap fix but a bugger of a job to do on your own. Getting that tank back up into place was hard with one trolley jack and one person :-).

Thanks for all the replies with advice.
