Hi all
I have a 06 79 trayback that I do not drive all that often, it only has 6000 kms on the clock and I've had it since new.
For the first 4-5 thousand ks I was just driving it fairly gently, although was not afraid to get the turbo whistling on long trips carting 1200 kgs of wood and let plenty of fuel in,so I think it has had a fairly normal initial 5000 kms or so.
The last couple of months I have noticed that if on a back road with not much noise that there is a slight bit of a rattle coming from the motor.
Its most evident in 3rd when coasting at about 40 and happens from about 1200 rpm to about 1800 -2000 with about half throttle down so it is under load.
I noticed it one day with the window down so you do have to be listning for it, although I am rather paranoid when it comes to this kind of thing and think if you were a person who did not pay too much attention to your cars sound it would probably go unheard.
Does anyone elses 1HD-FTE motor do this?
With the amount of work the ute has done should I have had the valve clearances checked? Because I believe this motor runs a fairly unique setup being a
bridge arrangement were each rocker works 2 valves.
I am not overly concerned and am still driving the ute as normal but was thinking I should perhaps get it looked at as it is still under warranty. Maybe its just a little noise that they all make but as I do not know anyone with this same motor I don't know.
Can anyone shead some light on this otherwise fantastic motor?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance Brad

Well, Brad, when I started reading this I thought you wanted to sell it, seeing as you don''t drive it much!!!
Would agree with Davoe that it sounds like fuel pipe hammer, especially as it starts around 1200 rpm. My 2002 model does it, and there's no way you couldn't hear it!
However, I understand that a mod was done to stop this, and with yours being a '06 model then it should have the revised fuel line.
Doubt if it needs the valve clearances done at 6,000 clicks.
Hooroo,
Bob.

I agree with the others, that its unlikely to be any more than fuel line hammer.
Mine is a 2002, and they came without any dampening for the fuel line hammer, so the sound was quite loud and was most pronounced when crawling around in low range. Toyota fitted a dampener and 80% of the noise disappeared. I can still hear it a little.
The noise comes from where the metal fuel pipe contacts the top of the firewall, and the hammer originates from the injector pump. The original solution was to replace this metal pipe with rubber hose, but Toyota came up with a better solution, which is the black can that sits on the intake manifold.
Your valve clearances, as you say are an oddball
bridge arrangement, but the clearances rarely require adjusting, so at 6000k, you don't have an issue. Although they are listed as a 20k adjustment, most agree that 40k is plenty often enough.
I also use my vehicle spasmodically - if not on a trip, it sits unused in the garage. I put the Chemtech diesel additive to prevent the fuel from growing bugs, and put the batteries on a charger every month.
Cheers
Phil

Ahhh ok fuel pipe hammer, bit of a relief to know that other peoples motors does this too. Because I know that it is highly unlikely that there should be something wrong, especially being an 06 I'd have thought toyota would have seen to little things like this. So the earlier ones do it even louder??
Yes I do agree that getting the clearances checked seems unnecessary at this point in time but didn't really know what else it could be. Good idea Phil will start doing the same with the chemtech to prevent algae.

Have to agree with Phil re. Valves, after getting a quote for the 20K service of $900 decided to have my son (motor mechanic) do the service and found no adjustment was required.
I believe my truck is a little noisier after 40k but not when the window is up.
It's only getting better with age. Last 5K have averaged 11.5L/100 only trouble has been with rat's eating the vac hoses.
