Hi All,
As there are a large number of Patrollers on this
forum and I'm not quite brave enough yet to join the Patrol4x4
forum, I would like to know some real world consumption figures for the 4.2 Intercooled Diesel and the 4.8 Petrol. If anyone has figures for towing both a CT or van they would also be appreciated.
Also are there any issues with the 4.8 5 speed auto I need to be aware of, most of the 4.2 issues seem to be found on searches in the forums but not much on the 4.8.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers Glen.

thanks bill, thats what I was guessing around, although I have seen people quote up to the 20 mark when towing, but there's no telling how heavy some peoples right boot is.

Hi Glen,
Robin on this
forum has a 4.8 and is usually one to help out so he will see this and jump in i am sure....
I notice that the Patrol 4x4
Forum has disabled new registrations, they were having some
forum problems which are being looked into.
Failing that, there is a patrol list on Yahoo and specific GQ and GU forums which developed from there as
well. These are generally friendly and informative too so don't worry. There also may be some stuff in their archives which will help you without having to ask anything.

Hi Wayne
I'm in a bad mood , it was miserable and wet today, I only just escaped a bog hole , and then the wind blew closed the huge shed door on our 4wd property, whilst the car was in the way , sitting in the car I saw it coming and opened the car door into the rapidly closing shed door in and effort to reduce the impact in the 2 seconds I had to react.
It caught the back edge of the drivers door and pushed the lip in in 2 or 3
places.
Anyway - back on the subject for Glen - never towed a van really But I have just achieved my worst ever fuel consumption figures in the manual 4800 of about 25lt/100km towing a trailer across the Simpson ,
Birdsville to
Oodnadatta.
I maintain precise figures on the 4800 and it has delivered 16.5lt /100km over 150,000km - with a best per
tank of 14.1 whilst touring at 90kmh.
I have driven 3 patrols 4.2GU 3lt Gq and 4800 GU on a test 1500km drive thru dessert
border track during which
the gap between the diesel and the petrol (which did it a lot easier) narrowed from some 33% better on the highway to about 17% difference in favour of the diesel in the sand.

I forgot Glen , there are no known sestemiic issues with the 4800 or with its 5 speed auto , thats why they is not much around on it.
While its an obvious path to go down , I have heard of a few issues with gas conversions on them , but no more than other cars. With the typical 25000k I do per year, gas would amount to a saving of $2000/yr but so far I have resisted this for the piece of mind of have a big lazy simple 6.
Even the release of the 200 series has not knocked the 4800 patrols off the top of the list of the highest power / weight ratio of any big wagons.

OUCH!!!
Good quick thinking though probably saved an expensive repair bill. So where will you NOT
park your car in future? JUST Kidding...lol
From the tales of woe regarding petrol wagons vs diesel wagons 25/100 towing across a desert is amazing.

ExplorOz, as you may have guessed has the answer to everything 4WD if you search (or ask).
ExplorOz Trek Fuel Consumption Data
You will need to scroll down to the engine types and size you are looking for.
These are particularly good as they equate to real world consumption figures.
Please add your own figures whenever you can. As you may notice the more entries we have the more useful they are.
hope this helps.

If you click on the Trek name there is sometimes more vehicle data in the notes.

G'day Glen,
We have a 2004 4.2 intercooled toy.
There seems to be a HUGE variation in quoted fuel use figures by owners of most vehicles.
Driver attitude, load, tyres size etc, etc must make a big diff.!
We just came back from a few days around Jervis bay and was surprised by the economy we got, 10.4L/100k.
Before you all start with cries of B@%###tt, we were carrying a bag of clothes, a couple of cameras and empty roof rack, rarely went over 100klm/hr and just rolled around the coast road taking our time.
With the same load sitting on 110klm/hr we get 11.5 kl/100k.
12-12.5l/100km around town. Probably 16-18l/100klm on
the beach.
I think fuel use depends on vehicle use?
Good luck trying to work it out!
Cheers Nifty

Exactly... I think some people need new calculators!
Ive seen people quoting funny figures for 4.8's.
Wish I would have bookmarked th page with the link to the 54/100 or worse that the maggos got on their test of the 4.8 in soft sand work... it got a mention here, but search is LMAO..

My 2.8 is good for 12/100 round town and 16/100 once you go the wrong side of 110kph.

Hi truckster,
Just y reason for the question, I was reasonably confident in the 4.2 TD figures but wanted to be sure I wasn't off track, but the 4.8 I have heard everything from 15's to 30's so need to narrow it down a bit.

its impossible to get accurate figures.
theres way too many variables involved
tires - AT/MT width/height/pressures
accessories
weight of truck
weight of drivers foot
auto/manual
roofrack
state of tune
air filter condition
oil age
road conditions etc etc
just a few off top of my head.
I've heard some dreamy figures from 4.2's as welll, such as 8-9/100...
as you say if you work on 15-50/100 you will be ok ;)

Hi Glen, I
check each time i fill up which is about every ten days
I have 04 cab chassis. Around town which, on the
gold coast, includes quick motorway stints I consistantly get 15-15.5 lts/100
I carry ladders on the racks and about 500kg of gear.
On highway at 95klm with no hills but car loaded as above I have had as low as 14lts/100.
Towing camper, Ultimate, and driving steadily on trip 16.5+lts/100
Running 33" mud tyres, exhaust mods and tuned
Speedo checked to GPS and accurate
Cheers Jim

My 4.8 Auto (5 speed) Patrol is just over 6 years old and 133,000 km's without any problems other than a steering damper leak.
The car has done the Simpson 5 times, the Anne Beadell,
Gibb River etc, Love the power, love to drive it, but I am lucky the company pays the petrol bill. Great to tow with.
Fully loaded with heaps on the roof rack, worst has been 3km per litre in the Simpson, best 5 km pr litre on the blacktop and no pussy footing on the loud pedal. Would buy another 4.8 Auto in preference to a 4 speed auto 3 litre diesel.
Hope that is some help.
