Would a weight distribution hitch be an advisable addition to our set up for touring around Oz? We have a Pajero and are towing a 1400kg (unladen) pop top? Is it perhaps something we could add later, or be a waste of money, or an essential item?
I don't mind admitting I'm very new at this, but I'd rather get it right the first time before disaster strikes!!!

They do give a better balanced rig. Even though the Ball weight may not be all that much the WDH can improve the overall performance of the rig.

Hi 2Dogs,
There is a wealth of info on this and other forums on WDH's. We are also very new to caravanning and before doing too much travelling tried towing without a WDH and then with one fitted. IMHO it is definitely worth the outlay. Wouldn't be without one now.

Cheers and happy travels

We have a NM Pajero and tow a 1500kg poptop. Have a Hayman Reece WDH. Improves ride and stability dramatically. Take the time to measure up and setup the hitch properly. HR site will give you all the information required to get setup right.

If your van is 1400kg empty you will be somewhere around 1700-1800kg loaded & ideally you will have around 170kg + down load in the tow ball in order to have a stable towing combination

This means you need a weigh distributing hitch

Many people say they are not needed & have towed for years without using them but given the worst combination of circumstances it may save you from having a accident

Basicly if you hook any van onto any vehicle & the front of the vehicle lifts a wdh will assist in transferring weight back on to the front wheels

A Weight Distribution Hithch (WDH) not only distributes the weight from the towball but also increases/improves the stability of the towed vehicle. For what they cost and the increased level of safety they provide, do not consider 'leaving home' without one. You owe it to your family and every other motorists on the road that you may encounter. Cheap insurance against many mishaps.

Hello,
I do tow a 5.8m tandem poptop with my Patrol, previously with an 80 series Landcruiser without the use of WDH.
In my opinion it only takes one occasion in which you suddenly wish for all the help under the sun to get out of to justify a WDH.
I had one of those moments which I did get out of ,but will be buying a WDH soon,ie before next trip.
Ive been towing for 20 odd years without but as I said it only takes one time... money well spent.
regards Alan.

Got a wind up camper with very similar weights to yours. I tow it with a Triton D/cab and without the hitch the camper used to swerve a lot. Fitted the hitch and no more problems. Would not tow my camper without it now.
