In what context? Mobile or fixed?

I can't speak for the mobile variety, but use a fixed one at home for talking to relatives overseas and find it to be very good.

Do you get many drop outs or echoes?

We've been using it for about 4 years now and can safely say the technology has steadily improved over that time. I can't remember any dropouts or echoes over the last couple of years - the quality and clarity are just like using the regular phone.

I have used Skype for years, both PC to PC and PC to phone. Very cheap to call overseas phones. PC to PC is free.
It works great and the quality on overseas call is often better than a local call on the land line.

We use another VOIP system. Smartvoice. Use our regular phones and phone number. Works great. Has saved us a fortune.

Yep we have been doing the same for the past 3 years, although using Pennytel. 8c untimed anywhere in Oz and to 20 other countries including the USA and UK, 10.5c / minute to mobiles with no flagfall.

Costs $5 / month for access and a "real" phone number, but you then get a rebate of 50 calls / month.

Except for any work related calls where I have to dial up using a modem on the standard PSTN line our phone bill (calls only) comes in most months at under $10, and that includes 3 of the kids and Tracy calling friends and family back in NSW on an almost daily basis.

Cheers

Richard

Thanks for that. I will do a bit of headscratching and analyzing our phone bills to try to compare the Smartvoice deal with the Pennytel options. They both look pretty good, It will just depend on each families use pattern as to which works best for you.

Skype home to Aus everyday to talk to my wife. I am in Sudan at the moment. PC to PC works great. Is very dependant on broadband service though. In Sudan bandwidth is an issue so we get some echo and dropouts but, for the cost (free) no complaints

Been using Skype nearly since it started. The quality has been improving to the point where I don't really have any issues anymore. I even have cordless phones at home with the Skype function which has been great. saved a fortune in overseas calls and I know of businesses that have saved thousands a month using it too. I'm now looking at the 3 Skypephone as mobile, just wish I could get a car cradle/charger for it.
