Has any one done this route recently? if so what are the road conditions? We are leaving Brissy next Monday for Cape York and propose to venture down the roads less travelled. Also on the way is Porcupine Gorge to Mt Surprise. The other roads are listed or black top. Thank you in advance, PAWB.

Peter,

I haven't travelled those roads recently, but I have travelled them a few years ago, so I'll give my thoughts.

Eungella Dam good campground. The road from there to Collinsville is steep and stony and narrow for the first section. After you leave the ranges it's easier. Having said that we had no problems.

From Collinsville to Burdekin Dam was good dirt, just the normal minor corrugations, stoney sections etc. It's a real buzz driving across the spillway at Burdekin Dam....

Porcupine gorge to Mt Surprise is the Kennedy Developmental Road and is a well used road. It can be a bit rough in places but overall good.

There is a lot of diverse and interesting country along these tracks and we enjoyed travelling them, hope you do too.

Another thought for you. You can go from Marlborough on the inland road to Nebo and then from Nebo there is a road that goes up the back way into Eungella Dam following the pipe line. Along the way there is an old mining town, I think it was called Mount Britton, which is very interesting to check out.

The road from Mt Surprise through to Chillagoe was an enjoyable drive too.

We were through that way last year and it has not changed at all since Viv was there, just check with the ranger at Burdekin Dam as to whether there is water on the spillway as it is a long way back.
We went the other way Burdekin, Collinsville to Eungalla via Blenhiem Station but next time I would go via the pipeline route, a bit hairy with the van.
Cheers
