hi,

I have a 94 Landcruiser 80 series, 4.5l Unleaded petrol and have had for around 15 months now.

I am interested to know what sort of economy other owners of this model vehcle are getting, or what i should be expecting.

I have always run this on Premium unleaded (or BP ultimate) and around the city usually get around 6.3 to 6.5 klm per litre. I have aways gottent his milage so considered it normal.

We have just returned from it's first big trip from Perth to Broome and back, a total of around 5,600 klms. The economy on this trip averaged out at 5.6 klm per litre.

All bar about 500klm were highway driving. and the car was only about half loaded.

We weren't driving excessivley fast, but the engie revs high and so the revs were commonly between 2,600 and 3,000 for the highway driving.

Others with us on the trip couldn't believe how poor the economy was, and tried ofering solutions to improve it. One thought it smelt like it was running rich and suggested a new oxygen sensor may be required.

Now I'm not overly mechanincally minded myself, and even less mechanincally skilled, so before i spend a fortune on having mechanics try and determine if there is a problem, i thought i would seek the feedback from anyone who may have this same vehcile or issue.

The car is absolutely beautiful to drive, runs super quiet and purrs like a kitten, So is this normal economy for the vehicle or do i have a potential problem that's quite well hidden?

Any help please.....!

I get around 5 out of my 4.5l Patrol around 600km’s out of 125 liters. This used to be a lot worse, I went and got a dyno done and they worked out that my oxy sensor was faulty and after a new sensor and a proper tune she was as good as new with more power and better fuel economy

Sibe,I have a 93 4.5, Towing my pop top I use 20l/100 on out- back roads, dirt, corrugated, etc., Last trip 10,000ks, returned 400ks/80l consistently. Van weighs 1.5t, Cruiser loaded + van probably about 4t+ all up.I don`t go at high speed,80kph max. High-way use with out van at about 95/100kph uses16l/100, once you go over 100 they are thirsty.

Hi
Lots of variables tyres and pressure, suspension lift, auto, manual, roof rack. etc etc.
Petrol 80 series certainly like a drink but as you say they are a nice engine
and a very good ride and the best still going all over in my unbiast expert opinion!!
You will get all sorts of feed back on fuel consumption. From very bad.
Which is more the likely scenario than the very good figures?
From your figures compared to my 80 series yours are bit on the high side.

6.2 klm per liter or 16 liters per 100 klm hyw would be a good average.

5.6 klm per liter or 18 liters per 100 klm city average.

I could only suggest try a tune new plugs ignition leads (top gun leads)
And go from there and consider LPG.

Rob.

I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!

Hi Sibe,

That oxygen sensor could well be the problem. Exhaust gas analysis might tell.

Either way, if you are of a mind to, get it converted to dual fuel.

Most places you go will have LPG available and those that don't you can use unleaded. Best of both worlds - so to speak.

I had mine (97 80 series ) converted as soon as I got it. The best thing I ever did. I have owned 3 LPG vehicles in the last 10 years and only bought the cruiser to pull the 2 tonne caravan as the EL falcon was too light in the engine and body, IMHO.

These big engines perform well on gas and the cost saving will keep you laughing.

It will probably take 12 months worth of driving to recoup the cost but remember that the govt. gives private owners a $2000 rebate.

Regards,
Gazal.

Should have added that my beast only gets 5.5 k per litre unloaded but with 4 adults and 95 litres of gas and 50 litres of petrol.

The gas load is a diminishing thing of course.

But at 72 cents per litre who cares, I can afford to go places and enjoy the old girl. Works for me.

I find it strange you are getting better fuel consumption arround town then the open road. Your arround town economy is as good as my manual jack, but the jack will do 8.6ks/l at 105.
Big lifts, and aggresive tyres will kill economy. But do get a tune, and maybe run a lighter oil in the engine and run sythetics in the drive line.
Cheers pete

no lift kits and running road tyres, so these shouldn't help.
Did have a set of rola roof racks carrying some fishing rods, but would think the drag from them would be minimal.

Sibe,
2600-3000 rpm at hwy driving sounds like the overdrive is not working (assuming it's an auto).
A friend of mine has a 100 series (same engine) and was getting 'bad' economy. I took the genuine air filter out of my 80 series and put it in his which had an aftermarket filter and he drove it for a week. He claimed that the economy improved and also power was better.
When was the last valve adjustment done? when the motor is hot allow it to idle and get next to the tailpipe, if you hear a flutter / popping sound comping from the exhaust it is most likely that you need a valve adjustment done.

Check for vacuum leaks (hissing sound) as well.

Thanks all for your responses.

Should have mentioned it is a manual engine.

I run a K & N air filter. i put this in shortly after getting the car, and this improved the around town ecoomy to 6.3 - 6.5 klm per litre that i mentioned. (it was previously below 6)

Looks like i have a few things to try anyway.

thanks
