Is this Bad??

I am about to do an oil and Filter change on Darkie and I couldn't remember the oil specs for the oil I needed. I just looked it up and found that I should be using 10W30 oil and I have a bad feeling that I used 15W40 last change.
Would this have caused any problems??
It is 4500km since I last did the oil change. I reckon that Darkie has used less than 100ml of oil in that time but his fuel economy is shocking (over 20L/100km for the Innamincka trip).

Cheers Kev

Kev,

20lt per 100 is not that bad towing a trailer in that type of country.
The oil would be better to a little thicker in the warmer climates any how.

And it is a Toyota.

Wayne

That 20l/100km did involve towing a very light trailer ;) and doing 100km/h+ on most sealed roads.

The next long trip that I'll do will probably be to the Pyrenees and back if I find a travel partner as the rest of the family are not that keen to travel 2000+ km one way for a 3 day gathering :)

Cheers Kev

Darkie was travelling just a little quicker than your MU and was towing close to 2000kg for the trip out to Innamincka LOL

But you have to remember I was towing a little block of flats lol
The best I seen was 14.47 LP/100 doing $1.00 to $1.10, that was going around to Eromanga and a nice road and not much traffic. What motor do you have in Darkie?

Hello Young Kev, the wrong oil will do no harm to your filter mate, so don't worry about changing it!! However your motor will probably blow up as a result of your carelessness. Then you will be able to buy a proper vehicle, a Mazda. LOL

Kev, We hope to take our "Wobble Box" up your way and beyond ( the pointy part of Qld, the bit where all the BS is vented to atmosphere!!) some time next year. We would love to attend a gathering such as the Innaminka one and be able to actually meet some of the many people you sort of get to know on this site. So, if we are able, we will try and plan it so that our travels take us to the venue area at that time of the year. Cheers.

15W40 is the standaed grade for diesel oils,99% of the available oils will be this.10W40 can be used but only realistically if you live in a cold environment.i use 15 in my cruiser and any diesel i have owned in the last 20 years and never had a drama and i live in the dandenongs which is a cold area like today( absolute chit weather about 10 deg top!!) dont stress he/she will live.Paul

That's what I thought hence me using 15w40 last time.

I am probably worrying over nothing :)

Two things re the oil. Firstly, most oils lose some of their rated viscosity once they've done a bit of work.
Secondly; think about what's happening here. A 10/30 means it acts like a 10 when you start but a 30 when it's hot. If you've substituted a 15/40, it's a bit thicker when you start. Oh dear, it'd be just the same if you were in the snow. The 40 just means it won't thin out as much when it's hot. Again, oh dear!
At the worst you've made your starter motor work a little harder and dropped a little economy. At best, if you've been to hot places, you've extended the life of your engine. Relax!!

LOL

I was the only one at Innamincka who thought the weather was a bit warm, so Darkie will last at least 3 of Barry's lifetimes ;)

Howdy Kev, Think that 20lt per 100 has a lot to do with ya right boot. We averaged 16.2lt per hundred for the trip towing our camper. Sitting between 85 and 95, sometimes 100 on the way home. Just driving around Inna doing the touristy type things without towing we averaged 10.4 lt per 100. Most of that was probably about 50 or 60 kays in 4th and 5th.

Cheers Krakka

:))

My right boot is used to not having to pay for fuel in the work car LOL

We did less than 200km for the 6 days we were there for the tourist stuff so I didn't calculate economy for that amount of travel

Cheers Kev

Hi Kev,
I checked fuel on our Birdsville trip recently, going a bit slower, say 85-95kph gave me 15-16 l/100... but just going a bit harder at 110-120kph sent the fuel out to 19l /100. That's towing our trailer, which is a reasonably heavy one, and a roof rack as well.

So your 20 l/100 sounds like a combination of towing and heavy boot to me.

Yeah,

I will have to curb my driving speeds soon as the fuel price isn't going to come down anytime soon even though the price of oil has dropped ;)

Although I won't care after tonight when I win the $50 Million in Lotto hehe

Cheers Kev
