Hi all,

A question for those who also tour.

I've got a Caltex StarCard with my lease on the Patrol.

I have enquired and can get two additional outlets at no extra cost.

I can choose 2 of the 3 below.

Mobil
BP
Shell

Which 2 do fellow forumites reckon will provide the best range of cover. (Bearing in mind that I have a fuel range of about 1000km towing the Kanga so if I had to skip a town it's not the end of the earth.)

I've always kept a fuel log book but never noted what brand I bought. Never thought I'd need to know.

Any suggestions???

Dave

We don't use fuel cards in our company because a lot of places will not accept them and you are tied to one fuel supplier who may not have an outlet where you want it.

We issue Mastercards.

There is not one good fuel card as each state will have more of one fuel company then the other.

Here is SA about 7 years ago there would be a Mobil not far from a Shell, apparently all the fuel companys go together and and made one fuel company more prominent in each state.

The Shell stations survived and a lot of the Mobils were closed down.

An example only. An example only. An example only.

Shell more prominent in SA
Mobil more prominent in NSW
Caltex more prominent in VIC

I think they did this to stop competition between the brands.

I run caltex and BP with mine and you can use caltex card at mobil anyway but a fee applies. With these two cards i had no trouble travelling around Australia. Of course there are places where it wont matter what you have say when you are on the plenty and have to get fuel half way. there aint much choice in those type of areas.

You sure about using Caltex card at Mobil?

I have Caltex card and regularly use it at AMPOL when in regional areas. Between that and a Shell card I can usually find something.

Mind you having 180 litre tank helps!

I reckon there is more Shell than others, in Vic and NSW anyway.

Cheers

Caltex have the most petrol stations in Australia with Shell second. BP and Mobil are along way behind.

If I had to get two, Shell and Caltex would be my choice.

I live in regional Victoria and I have a lease vehicle where the Caltex card is the default. I find that generally it is difficult to find Caltex/Ampol/Safeway outlets outside the major centers (Plenty in Melbourne of course). Even where I live it is inconvenient to use the Caltex card.

So I now carry Caltex, BP and Mobil cards and I generally do not have too many issues finding an outlet when I need it. I looked at also getting a shell card but I find shell outlets are probably the least common of the major fuel outlets around regional Victoria (There are none near where I live). Also, Shell charge a monthly account keeping fee while the others do not.

The best card we had was a Fleetcard. Our lease management company stopped using them. Now carry BP, Shell and Caltex (which can also be used at Ampol and Woolworths).

Just had an aftermarket main tank fitted so I can max out my fuel when I get a place that takes one of the fuel cards I carry.

If your lease card is not accepted you can always pay by credit card (make sure you get a tax invocie) and then you can claim
all fuel expenses once you get back from the trip...
I do that al lthe time.
